Billions: Showtime’s Finance Drama and Its On-Screen BDSM Marriage

2025年3月9日
A A

Billions is Showtime’s American finance drama, created by Brian Koppelman, David Levien, and Andrew Ross Sorkin. It premiered on 17 January 2016 and ran seven seasons; the last one opened 13 August 2023. The map is New York and Connecticut. Hedge-fund manager Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis) piles up money and power; U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) keeps trying to put him in a cage. That war is the show’s engine. For kink viewers the other engine is the marriage: Chuck is a slave, Wendy Rhoades dominates him, and season 4 puts the practice into a public political speech. The producers hired lifestyle consultant Olivia Troy so the scenes would look like actual BDSM instead of costume-department leather. The series is a hedge-fund show that happens to contain one of prestige television’s longest-running D/s marriages. Both halves belong in the write-up.

The finance war: Axelrod, Rhoades, and the cases that built the bible

Chuck Rhoades, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, goes after Axe. Each man uses every lever he has — law, money, press, marriage, friendship — to outmaneuver the other. The character is built on Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for SDNY from 2009 to 2017, and on the real federal prosecutions of financial crime that defined that office. Season 1 loosely tracks Bharara’s 2013 case against Steven A. Cohen and S.A.C. Capital Advisors. Season 2 borrows Salomon Brothers’ 1991 manipulation of U.S. Treasury bonds. Sorkin came out of financial journalism; Koppelman and Levien came out of crime-caper storytelling. The result is a soapy, well-researched fable about insider trading, political ambition, and men who think the law is a tool they personally own.

Showtime ordered the series in March 2015. Season 1 launched 17 January 2016 and was renewed nine days later; season 2 premiered 19 February 2017. A fifth season was ordered 8 May 2019 and premiered 3 May 2020. A sixth came on 1 October 2020, with Corey Stoll promoted to series regular. On 15 February 2022 Showtime ordered a seventh and final season. The first episode went out early on 1 January 2016 via U.S. video-on-demand and Canada’s CraveTV, premiered in Australia on Stan on 27 January, and ran on The Movie Network in Canada the same night as the American broadcast. Bharara, watching Giamatti play a version of his job, joked about the “noted Indian American actor Paul Giamatti.” In February 2023 Showtime talked up spin-offs set in London and Miami and a working-title Millions about thirty-something would-be moguls in Manhattan. Paramount executive Brian Robbins still mentioned them at a June 2024 shareholder meeting. By November 2024 the Wall Street Journal reported that a Miami script had been delivered, had not been greenlit, and that the other plans were dead.

Axe Capital, the Southern District, and the people in between

Giamatti’s Chuck is ruthless about wealthy criminals who try to buy their way out. The job is huge; the man is still overshadowed by his higher-earning wife Wendy and by his well-connected father. He went to Yale, as did his father, and sits on a blind trust his father trustees. In private he is a sadomasochist who role-plays as a slave with Wendy and with other women. The career template is Bharara plus Eliot Spitzer. Lewis’s Bobby Axelrod (seasons 1–5 and 7) is a Hofstra graduate from nothing who rebuilt his firm as Axe Capital after surviving 11 September and paying college tuition for the children of colleagues who died in the towers. In public he is wildly charitable. In the office he uses insider trading and bribery. His trading instincts are written as nearly infallible. The real-world shadow is Cohen and S.A.C.

Maggie Siff’s Wendy Rhoades is a psychiatrist and in-house performance coach at Axe Capital, later Chuck’s ex-wife. She is self-possessed, Yale-trained, and has worked with Axelrod for more than fifteen years. She dominates Chuck in their BDSM play. That is not a kinky garnish on a finance wife. It is how the marriage is written: she tops him at home and she is the only person both warring men actually need. Malin Åkerman’s Lara Axelrod (starring seasons 1–3, guest season 4) is Axe’s wife, later ex, a former nurse who still holds her license, blue-collar origin, devoted to the kids. Her brother Dean, an FDNY firefighter, died on 9/11. She hates how close Axe is to Wendy. Toby Leonard Moore’s Bryan Connerty starts as chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force and Chuck’s point man, later becomes U.S. Attorney himself, then goes down for illegal witness tampering. Chuck eventually moves him to a white-collar prison after a deal with Connerty’s brother.

David Costabile’s Mike “Wags” Wagner is Axe’s COO and right hand, a known drug and sex addict who claims cocaine helps him work. Condola Rashad’s Kate Sacker rises from AUSA in the Southern District to assistant to the New York attorney general and is waiting for a congressional run on the way to the White House. Asia Kate Dillon’s Taylor Amber Mason (recurring season 2, starring 3–7) is the gifted analyst who gets close to Axe, is named CIO while he is under legal fire, then leaves to found Taylor Mason Capital, which Axe later forces back in as a subsidiary. Dillon is non-binary; Taylor is the first non-binary character on an American TV series. The show was nominated repeatedly for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series for that representation. Showtime confirmed Dillon as a season-3 regular in April 2017.

Jeffrey DeMunn’s Charles Rhoades Sr. (recurring 1–2, starring 3–7) is the rich city/state fixer who meddles in his son’s life, abused his ex-wife, cheated, and had a child with another woman he then married. Kelly AuCoin’s “Dollar” Bill Stearn (recurring 1–3 and 6, starring 4–5 and 7) is the Axe portfolio manager loyal enough to risk incriminating himself. AuCoin called him “the cheapest millionaire in America.” Dollar Bill’s returns come from insider trading and other legally grey moves. Corey Stoll’s Michael Prince (recurring 5, starring 6–7) is the Indiana farm-boy magnate who talks like he wants to give back, was Mr. Basketball at New Castle High School, takes over Axe Capital in season 6, renames it Michael Prince Capital, and tries to land the 2028 Summer Olympics for New York. Daniel Breaker’s Scooter Dunbar is Prince’s right hand, later sharing that job with Wags. Sakina Jaffrey’s Daevisha “Dave” Mahar (seasons 6–7) joins Chuck to fight corruption and take Prince down. Toney Goins’s Phillip Charyn, Scooter’s nephew, is recruited in season 7 for his business brain. The ensemble is the show bible: prosecutors, traders, a performance coach, a non-binary CIO, and a billionaire who keeps slipping the indictment.

Chuck as slave, Wendy as dominant, Olivia Troy in the credits

The BDSM community noticed Billions because the show did not treat kink as a one-episode corpse. Chuck and Wendy play D/s scenes through the early seasons: he is the slave, she is the dominant, and the play is written as part of how a high-functioning political marriage actually works. He needs to kneel. She is good at making him do it. Other women enter that dynamic; the marriage remains the frame. In season 4 Chuck comes out as a BDSM practitioner in a public political speech — not a whispered confession to a shrink, a campaign-level admission. That is the beat kink viewers still cite. Prestige TV will give you a dungeon. It almost never lets a U.S. Attorney say the word in a speech and keep his plot.

Koppelman and Levien hired Olivia Troy, a known BDSM lifestyle expert, as consultant so the activities would read as accurate and safe. The difference shows. The gear is not Halloween. The negotiation sits inside a long relationship rather than a shock cut. Wendy topping Chuck is also a class and power joke the finance plot needs: the man who can indict a billionaire still has to ask his wife for permission to come. For this site that is the reason the series belongs next to Secretary and the better documentary work, not next to a CSI dominatrix-of-the-week. The show is about money. The marriage is about surrender. The writers were smart enough not to pick one.

Taylor Mason, they/them, and what the critics actually said

After Taylor arrives in season 2, Billions becomes the first American series with a non-binary character and a non-binary actor in that role. Coverage praised the workplace use of singular they and the fact that the character is a brilliant trader first, not a lesson. GLAAD nominations followed. The representation talk is earned; it should not erase the D/s marriage, which got less awards-circuit language and more scene-world attention.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the series an 86 percent overall: 78 percent season 1, 89 percent season 2, 93 percent season 3, 97 percent season 4, 91 percent season 5, 100 percent season 6, then 60 percent for the finale run. Season 1’s consensus called out unlikable characters and still granted soapy, larger-than-life repeat value. Season 2 was credited with new characters and a narrative twist. Season 3 was “a convincing fable of greed, power and competition” held up by Giamatti and Lewis. Season 4, tables turned and alliances rewritten, was the sharpest dialogue and the biggest stakes. Metacritic’s overall is 71. Season 1 scored 69 from 37 critics; season 2 scored 67 from six; season 3 reached 77; season 4 hit 87 from four reviews, which the site files as universal acclaim. Industry people have said the hedge-fund detail is unusually realistic for television. That realism is why the BDSM material lands: if the trading floor is right, the dungeon has to be right too, or the whole show starts looking like a costume.

Lawsuits: the coach who said she was Wendy, and a nation that said it was defamed

The series attracted copyright and defamation suits. In 2019 Denise Shull and the ReThink group filed Shull v. Sorkin, claiming Billions ripped off her book, based Wendy Rhoades on her, used her as an uncredited, unpaid consultant, and that a later video proved the consulting relationship. The case was dismissed and appealed. In July 2021 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit affirmed: Shull’s book and the show were not substantially similar. In 2020 the Cayuga Nation sued for defamation, arguing the series showed the nation running an illegal casino, blackmail, and bribery, and that one Cayuga character shared a last name and job with a real person. That case was also dismissed; the nation said it was weighing an appeal. Neither suit changed the on-screen facts that matter here. Wendy is still the in-house psychiatrist who tops her husband. Chuck is still the prosecutor who kneels. Axe is still the billionaire the Southern District cannot quite catch.

For kink readers the useful sentence is simple. Billions is a seven-season Showtime drama about a hedge-fund king and a U.S. Attorney, built from Bharara’s office and the Cohen case, that also hired a BDSM consultant and let its prosecutor come out as a slave. The finance plot is the show. The D/s marriage is why this site keeps the file.
