Fifty Shades Darker is a 2017 American erotic romantic drama directed by James Foley and written by Niall Leonard, based on E. L. James’s 2012 novel. Produced by Michael De Luca Productions and Trigger Street Productions and distributed by Universal Pictures, it is the second film in the Fifty Shades series and the sequel to 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey. Plot: Nightmares, SIP, and “No Rules”
After Ana leaves Christian, he suffers nightmares about his abusive childhood. Ana starts as assistant to editor Jack Hyde at Seattle Independent Publishing; his last three assistants quit within 18 months without notice. At José Rodriguez’s photography exhibit, Ana is dismayed that Christian has bought all of José’s portraits of her. He wants her back and accepts her terms: no rules, no punishments, no more secrets. He also reveals that his birth mother was a crack-addicted sex worker—early trauma framing for the control and sadism themes that follow.
When Jack and Ana head for an after-work drink, a young woman resembling Ana approaches her on the street. Christian arrives, is cold to Jack, and leaves with Ana. She dismisses his warnings about Jack’s reputation and is annoyed he is considering buying SIP. Jack expects her on a New York book expo trip; after speaking with Christian she agrees not to go. She again sees the same woman watching from afar. Christian eventually identifies her as Leila Williams, a former submissive who wanted more after their contract ended, married a man who later died, suffered a breakdown, and has been stalking him since.
Elena Lincoln, Esclava, and the Charity Ball
Before the Grey family’s annual charity ball, Christian takes Ana to Esclava, a beauty salon owned by Elena Lincoln—family friend, Christian’s former dominant, and the adult who introduced him to BDSM by sexually assaulting him when he was a minor. Ana is furious he brought her there and that they remain business partners. At the ball, sister Mia mentions Christian was expelled from four schools for fighting. Ana rebuffs Elena’s demand that she leave Christian and warns Elena to stay away. Back home they find Leila has vandalized Ana’s car; shaken, they retreat to Christian’s yacht. Work pressure returns: Ana is told she must attend the New York expo with Jack, creating tension with Christian. When she refuses Jack, he attempts to sexually assault her while they are alone at the office; she escapes. Christian uses his influence to have Jack fired; Ana is promoted to acting editor. Christian asks her to move in; she agrees. At her apartment, Leila waits with a gun. Christian and bodyguard Jason Taylor enter; Christian disarms Leila by becoming her dominant again—voice, posture, and D/s frame as crisis tool. Realizing how much she loves him, she accepts the marriage proposal. At his birthday, Elena calls Ana a gold digger; Ana orders her to stop interfering. Christian overhears and tells Elena she taught him “how to fuck” while Ana taught him “how to love.” Grace overhears, demands Elena leave for good; Christian cuts all ties. Production Timeline and Casting Adds
Universal and Focus secured trilogy rights in March 2012; the first adaptation opened 13 February 2015. In March 2014 Dana Brunetti still said there were no solid sequel plans; by the February 2015 fan screening, Taylor-Johnson announced both book sequels would be filmed, then told Digital Spy returning was not her call. On 25 March 2015 she left the franchise. On 2 April, De Luca returned to Universal to produce the sequels. On 22 April, Niall Leonard was announced as sequel screenwriter. Universal chair Donna Langley told The Hollywood Reporter the second film would be “more of a thriller.” Rita Ora was confirmed to return as Mia in July 2015. On 20 August, Deadline named Foley front-runner among other possible directors (Rebecca Thomas, Mark Pellington, Tanya Wexler). On 12 November, TheWrap confirmed Foley for both sequels, back-to-back 2016 shoots, with De Luca, Brunetti, and James producing; Johnson and Dornan returning.
On 28 January 2016, Basinger joined as Elena; Grimes, Mumford, and Martini were set to reprise. On 5 February, Heathcote was cast as Leila; later that month Eric Johnson as Hyde. On 18 February, Robinne Lee and Fay Masterson joined. Tyler Hoechlin (Boyce Fox) and reports of Hugh Dancy (Dr. John Flynn) were attached in press; neither appears in the finished film as those storylines did not land on screen. Filming used Paris and Vancouver under the working title “Further Adventures of Max and Banks 2 & 3,” with North Shore Studios booked in the Vancouver plan. The soundtrack split popular songs from Danny Elfman’s score (two Elfman themes also appeared on the songs album). Theme song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” by Zayn and Taylor Swift released 9 December 2016; Halsey’s “Not Afraid Anymore” followed 13 January 2017. On 15 September 2016 the first official trailer drew an unprecedented 114 million views in 24 hours across Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram—breaking the prior record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens (112 million), itself later topped by Disney’s Beauty and the Beast second trailer (127.6 million). About 39.4 million views were North American; 74.6 million came from 32-plus international markets including the U.K., Mexico, and France.
On 10 November 2016 the MPAA rated the film R for “strong erotic sexual content, some graphic nudity and language.” Canadian provinces mostly used 18A for sexual content (Quebec 16+ for eroticism). The U.K. issued an 18 for “strong sex.” The Philippines’ MTRCB gave R-18—adults only—because of strong sexual content. New Zealand originally rated it R18 with the first film, then in 2019 lowered it to R16 for sex scenes, language, and nudity. Critical Response
Like its predecessor, the film was widely panned for script, narrative, and the leads’ chemistry. Rotten Tomatoes: about 11% from 209 reviews, average ~3.23/10; consensus called it limp punishment that wants to be kinky. Metacritic: 33/100 from 39 critics. CinemaScore: B+ (up from the first film’s C+); PostTrak: 82% overall positive, 68% definite recommend. Richard Roeper gave two stars, calling it good-looking, occasionally titillating, mostly soapy and dull. Vince Mancini at Uproxx found it odd, dumb fun with a whooping audience but a slog past two hours. Manohla Dargis in The New York Times still rooted for Johnson amid on-and-off bondage romance and stalkerlike control outside the bedroom. Richard Brody in The New Yorker called it inferior to the first film and blamed bland impersonality after the director change—arguing the problem was indifference to character and cinematic substance, not merely the presence of sex.

For BDSM readers, Fifty Shades Darker is the franchise’s clearest collision of luxury romance with non-consensual danger: Leila’s armed breakdown, Jack’s workplace assault, and Elena’s history of abusing a teenage Christian. Donna Langley’s “more of a thriller” line was not empty marketing. Compared with the first film’s long seduction into the playroom, Darker front-loads external antagonists: a gun-wielding former submissive, a boss who assaults Ana at work, a helicopter sabotage cliffhanger, and a former dominant who still shares business interests with Christian. Those beats pull the story toward stalker melodrama and corporate power while the couple renegotiates whether rules and punishments still define them. Ana’s “no rules, no punishments, no more secrets” is the franchise’s clearest attempt to rewrite the D/s contract into girlfriend terms—yet the plot keeps proving that Christian’s past dynamics do not stay politely in the past.
That is exactly why educators separate Grey fantasy from community practice. Real BDSM scenes are negotiated, safeworded, and usually do not include secret surveillance, workplace firings arranged by a billionaire lover, or using Dominant voice to disarm an armed stalker. The film uses those images because they are dramatic, not because they model good consent. Watching with that filter on—enjoying the glossy thriller while refusing it as instruction—is the adult way to consume the middle chapter.
Unrated Cuts, Elena, and Supporting Texture
Home-video and unrated editions matter for Elena Lincoln and other beats trimmed or reshaped for theatrical flow. Kim Basinger’s casting was one of the sequels’ biggest “prestige” adds: a star associated with erotic cinema history playing the woman who initiated Christian into SM through abuse. Marcia Gay Harden’s Grace then becomes the moral counterweight—adoptive mother who finally hears enough to expel Elena from family life. Bella Heathcote’s Leila embodies the “ex-submissive who did not get aftercare or closure” nightmare in pulp form; Eric Johnson’s Hyde seeds the villain who will dominate Freed.
