In March 2014, producer Dana Brunetti said there were no solid plans for a sequel to the then-upcoming first film. After Fifty Shades of Grey opened (13 February 2015), fan demand stayed high. At a special New York fan screening on 6 February 2015, director Sam Taylor-Johnson confirmed two sequels, with Fifty Shades Darker then aimed at 2016. Universal later set theatrical release for 10 February 2017. Early stills included Jamie Dornan as Christian in a black mask.
