Wasteland—often called the Wasteland Party—is a major fetish event based in Amsterdam, with a later Berlin edition and a summer spin-off. Running since 1994, it ranks among the largest and longest-lived fetish parties in the world: multi-stage nights that mix BDSM and fetish performance, DJs, live music, international acts, visuals, cinema, and fashion shows by couturiers. Wasteland draws on the order of 6,000–8,000 visitors, with more than forty acts and more than five stages in its big editions. The Amsterdam event has been associated with the Northseavenue venue in recent years. History: 1994 Amsterdam and the Street Gangway
Wasteland began in Amsterdam in 1994 with an explicit mission—to pull fetishism out of pure underground secrecy and expose it to a wider, still consenting adult audience. Open-mindedness and tolerance remain stated key values. Early editions caused a public stir: gay, straight, and bisexual fetishists partying in full gear were not everyday street theatre in the city. Organizers built a gangway between Club Richter and Café Blitz on the Reguliersdwarsstraat so costumed guests could move between spaces while passersby watched from the street. Photographs of that bridge-of-kink moment circulated internationally. A 1996 Amsterdam court reference and later Dutch lifestyle coverage (including Playboy.nl pieces) mark how quickly the party became a local institution and a press subject. For scene historians, that gangway is origin myth and PR in one: fetish visibility as spectacle without pretending the party is vanilla cosplay.
Berlin, Summerfest, and the Contemporary Map
In 2011 Wasteland held its first edition outside the Netherlands at Berlin’s KitKatClub. Wasteland Berlin settled into a once-a-year October slot at KitKat—pairing Amsterdam’s brand with Berlin’s famous sex-positive club infrastructure. Since 2017 a summer edition, Wasteland Summerfest, has run in July; early summer editions used creative hotspot Thuishaven. Together the three brands—core Amsterdam, Berlin KitKat, Summerfest—give fetish tourists a calendar rather than a single annual pilgrimage.
