In 1876 the London publisher William Dugdale issued an underground book, The Convent School, or Early Experiences of A Young Flagellant. The byline is Rosa Coote. That name is a pseudonym. Inside the book, Rosa Coote is both the principal character and the supposed author. A confession frame, the character telling her own story, was standard Victorian porn packaging, there to make the tale feel attested. Dugdale did not invent the persona alone. The same name turns up in related stories in the underground erotic magazine The Pearl. Publishers recycled a character that sold, moving her from title to title.
Convent, school, and what this piece will not do
The book uses a convent and a school as its settings. Both kinds of building stood for order and authority, so the birch could look motivated instead of random. This article records that device. It does not specify the characters’ ages, and it does not describe the beatings. The “young flagellant” frame is period packaging for adult clandestine erotica. Readers here are adults. Treat the school and the convent as a Victorian set, not as a minor’s sex life and not as instructions for how to use a birch.
Ashbee’s verdict, and the bibliographic pointer
The packaging is clever. The judgment on the book is not kind. The bibliographer Henry Spencer Ashbee, writing as Pisanus Fraxi, put it bluntly: “the numerous flagellations, supplemented by filthy tortures, are insuperably tedious and revolting.” Collectors who tracked every birch title sometimes found it monotonous as well: scene stacked on scene, without the craft that keeps a few flagellation classics readable. The entry in Catena Librorum Tacendorum, volume III (1885), page 246, remains the standard bibliographic pointer. The book is an archival specimen of its moment, not a classic people still read.
