Nobuyoshi Araki (荒木 経惟, Araki Nobuyoshi; born 25 May 1940), often mononymously Arākii (アラーキー), is a Japanese photographer and contemporary artist whose work has made eroticism, bondage, and Tokyo street desire inseparable from fine-art photography. He has published more than five hundred books. For BDSM and kinbaku audiences he is one of the most cited image-makers of rope, nudes, and emotional excess—prolific, polarizing, and impossible to ignore in any map of Japanese SM aesthetics.
Early Life and Education
Araki was born in Tokyo on 25 May 1940. He studied film and photography at Chiba University from 1959 and graduated in 1963. He worked at the advertising agency Dentsu, where in 1968 he met essayist Yōko Aoki, later his wife. Advertising craft, street observation, and private life would all feed the diary-like method that made him famous.
Art Career: Between Gallery and Explicit
Araki is among the most prolific Japanese artists of his generation. Many photographs are frankly erotic, sitting on the contested line between art and pornography. Landmark books include Sentimental Journey (1971) and Tokyo Lucky Hole (1990). The long project often referred to as Sentimental Journey 1972–1992 is a visual diary of life with Yōko, who died of ovarian cancer in 1990: honeymoon and sexual intimacy early on; pictures from her final days later collected as Winter Journey. Photobook historians Martin Parr and Gerry Badger include four Araki titles in the first volume of their photobook history: Zerokkusu Shashincho 24 (Xeroxed Photo Album), Senchimentaru na Tabi (Sentimental Journey), Tokyo Lucky Hole, and Shokuji (The Banquet).
He contributed still photography to the Sunrise anime Brain Powerd. In 1981 he directed the Nikkatsu roman porno High School Girl Fake Diary (女高生偽日記, Jokōsei nise nikki)—a film that disappointed both Araki fans and pink-film regulars. Pop crossovers followed: Björk, an admirer, had him photograph the cover and inner sleeve of her 1997 remix album Telegram; later he photographed Lady Gaga. In 2004 American director Travis Klose released the documentary Arakimentari on Araki’s lifestyle and work. Personal shocks entered the public story: prostate cancer diagnosed in 2008 with successful tumor removal; the death of his cat Chiro in 2010; loss of vision in his right eye in October 2013 from a retinal artery obstruction—experience he turned into the 21 June 2014 Taka Ishii Gallery show Love on the left eye. Bottega Veneta commissioned him to photograph Saskia de Brauw and Sung Jin Park in Tokyo for the brand’s spring/summer 2015 campaign. For the European Cultural Centre in 2018 he produced the limited series Monstrous Paradise, channeling his feelings about life in Tokyo.
Controversy: Power, Access, and the Kaori Allegations
Araki’s reputation includes intimate access to models. In a 2011 remark he bragged that sex was how he gained that access. In April 2018, Kaori—a model who worked with him from 2001 to 2016—published a blog post accusing him of financial and artistic exploitation: no contract, forced explicit shoots in front of strangers, irregular pay, and nude images reused without consent. When in 2017 she asked him to stop republishing or exhibiting some photographs, she said he wrote back warning she had no rights. She described psychological trauma and ill health, and credited the Me Too movement with helping her speak. The claims reopened debate about photographer–subject power. The activist group Angry Asian Girls Association protested the December 2018 opening of an Araki exhibition at C/O Berlin to spotlight her account.
For kink communities that value consent culture, these allegations are not a footnote. Kinbaku and nude photography always risk collapsing staged power into real coercion; Araki’s case is a high-profile test of whether “genius” excuses process. Early self-made Zerokkusu Shashincho (Xeroxed Photo Album) volumes 1–25 (from 1970, editions of about seventy) sit beside the Japanese and later facsimile editions of Sentimental Journey. Tokyo Lucky Hole documents Shinjuku Kabuki-chō sex venues 1983–1985 (Ohta Shuppan 1990; large Taschen editions 1997–2015 with texts by Akira Suei and Akihito Yasumi). Shokuji / The Banquet (Magazine House, 1993) mixes black-and-white and colour stills with Araki’s text. Later survey volumes include Phaidon’s Self, Life, Death (2005, ed. Films by Araki include High School Girl Fake Diary (1981), Ai no Shinsekai (1994), and several flower/documentary shorts in the early 2000s. Films about him include the overseas-tour DVD documentary (2002) and Arakimentari (2004). Tokyo Biyori (1997) is a biographical drama about Yoko Araki’s life, co-written by Nobuyoshi Araki and Ryo Iwamatsu, directed by Naoto Takenaka, with Takenaka and Miho Nakayama as the couple and Araki in a cameo as a train conductor.
