Harvey John “Jack” McGeorge II (29 September 1949 – 18 August 2009) moved between strict technical work and open sexual culture. He served in the Marines, worked as a Secret Service specialist, and was a munitions analyst for the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC). At the same time he was a recognized BDSM advocate and educator in Washington, D.C. In 2000, on the strength of published work in biological and chemical weaponization, he defended that knowledge before the academic council of the State Research Institute for Organic Chemistry and Technology in Moscow and received an honorary doctorate. That line is a credential. It is not a recipe for making or using weapons.
The Washington Post and the resignation Blix refused
Over Thanksgiving weekend 2002, while weapons inspections in Iraq were under heavy international attention, the Washington Post reported McGeorge’s leadership in the Washington BDSM and leather community. He had not hidden the double life. His full name was on his website, and he said so to the press. When UNMOVIC took heat over a staffer’s private life, he offered to resign to protect the agency. Hans Blix, the chief U.N. inspector, did not accept it. Hua Jiang, spokeswoman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan, later said that BDSM was no more likely to become a cross-cultural flashpoint in the Middle East than many other private matters. Leather memory kept the episode as a marker, later commentary calling it a quiet win. Titles such as “A taste of the whip for Saddam” and “No Apologies: The Story Of Jack McGeorge” name his stance under public controversy. They are not whipping lessons.
Teaching, from the dungeon to policy
His community work stayed on teaching. Black Rose, which he helped found, became a main Washington platform for classes and discussion. Through the Leather Leadership Conference he helped train organizers. While doing directing work with the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, he pushed public-policy defense of sexual freedom. Chairing the Community-Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities, he tied dungeon practice to academic research. In his talks, protocol, risk, and institutional politics are adult subjects. The frame is informed consent between adults, not a crime script.
Awards that outlasted the headline
The honors followed. Pantheon of Leather Mid-Atlantic Regional Award in 1998 and 2000 (tied with Jonathan Krall in 2000). Pantheon of Leather Man of the Year in 2004. The first Master Jack McGeorge Excellence in Education Award from the Master/slave Conference in 2009, given after his death. Leather Hall of Fame in 2021, and the Centurion Award from the Leather Archives and Museum. Black Rose set up an excellence-in-education award in his name for people who do exemplary teaching for the club and the wider national community. The Leather Leadership Conference founded a Jack McGeorge scholarship. The outing became a standing investment in teachers.
