Isabella’s Italian title is Isabella Duchessa dei Diavoli, “Isabella, Duchess of the Devils.” Writer Giorgio Cavedon and artist Sandro Angiolini started the comic in 1966. It is widely treated as a progenitor of Italian adult fumetti, especially for sadomasochistic material that shocked readers at the time. The audience is adult. It is a strip and its adaptations, not a consent manual and not instructions for injuring anyone.
The story is set in seventeenth-century France. Isabella de Frissac is an uninhibited noblewoman working as a secret agent for Cardinal Richelieu. Plot and title take cues from the novel Angélique, the Marquise of the Angels and from the film versions that were big at the Italian box office. On mission she is put through the vexations, torture, and sexual danger the creators could stage. Period intrigue and erotic peril sit in the same panels.
Shock, a bear, and the pocket-strip aftermath
In the mid-1960s comics market, the sadomasochism was an outright innovation. The stories also push into the grotesque. Episode 8 shows the protagonist raped by a bear. Moving from soft erotic adventure into explicit SM and shock opened room for later Italian adult pocket comics. The drawn characters are adults.
From July 1969, Gaspare De Fiore and Umberto Sammarini replaced Angiolini on the art. Publication stopped in October 1976 after 263 issues. A collection series, Isabella Gigante, ran from 1969 to 1971. In 1969 Bruno Corbucci directed the film Isabella, Duchess of the Devils, starring Brigitte Skay. The comic also spun off novels under the title Le memorie di Isabella.
For adult readers tracing European SM comics, Isabella is where mainstream historical-romance fashion met pulp torture and sex. It sold power and pain: a duchess thrown, again and again, into sadomasochistic danger across more than two hundred issues, a feature film, and prose spin-offs. It does not explain consent.
