Freak on a Leash: Korn’s Nu Metal Hit, Leash Imagery, and Award Video

2025-03-09
A A

“Freak on a Leash” is a song by American nu metal band Korn from the 1998 album Follow the Leader. Issued as a single on 25 February 1999 (and re-released more than ten times worldwide), it became one of the band’s defining hits: dissonant, distorted, heavy, and built around Jonathan Davis’s caged vocal freak-out. Guitarist Brian “Head” Welch summarized the title as Davis being “a freak on a leash—sort of a kinky dominatrix thing.” Davis himself framed the lyric as railing against the music industry: “It’s about how I feel like I’m a fuckin’ prostitute.” That double charge—SM leash imagery plus fame-as-prostitution—keeps the track on “songs about BDSM” maps even when the primary target is the business of being a star.

Origins and Writing

After Follow the Leader dropped, Korn headlined the 1998 Family Values Tour (22 September–31 October); “Freak on a Leash” opened their first show. The original arrangement included a noisy mid-song guitar break the band nicknamed “the Biohazard part.” Learning that radio hated long noise breaks, they voted 4–1 to cut it—Davis the lone holdout. Leah Furman later wrote that the song “revolved around the mixed blessings of fame.” Written in 1997 and recorded in May 1998 at NRG Recording Studios in North Hollywood, it became their second single from the album cycle and one of their most successful tracks, issued three times in the UK, twice in Mexico and Australia, and once each in Germany, France, the United States, and Switzerland.

Sound and Composition

The studio cut runs 4:15. Dissonance, distortion, and guitar effects “bring the song to life.” University of Alberta scholar David Lloyd cited Davis’s vocal as “nonsense-utterance”: fragments of English inside gibberish, a voice for inner feeling resisting being shaped by others. Mood swings among anger, drama, and sarcasm. On 9 December 2006, Davis recorded an acoustic duet version with Amy Lee of Evanescence at MTV Studios in Times Square for Korn’s acoustic set—the “MTV version” that later charted on its own in some markets.

Music Video: Todd McFarlane’s Bullet World

The video, released 5 February 1999, debuted on MTV’s Total Request Live. Directed by comic artist Todd McFarlane with help from Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, it mixes animation and live performance. McFarlane’s animated cold open revisits the children (Korn members as cameos) playing hopscotch on the cliff from the Follow the Leader cover. A policeman interrupts; a gunshot sends a bullet out of the cartoon world into live-action reality. The bullet wreaks havoc, misses people, enters a Korn poster exactly at the song’s mid-break, orbits the band, and races home when Davis shouts “Go!” Back in animation, the girl in red catches the bullet and returns it to the cop; a loose “No Trespassing” sign teases the later “Falling Away from Me” video from Issues.

Awards stacked up: Best Editing and Best Rock Video at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards; Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video (2000); Metal Edge Readers’ Choice “Music Video of the Year.” It became the ninth video retired from TRL on 11 May 1999 after peaking at number one and spending ten non-consecutive days on top (debut number eight on 9 February; first number one on 25 February). The clip appears on the Deuce package. By late 2024 the song’s main YouTube upload had surpassed 343 million views.

Charts, Sales, and Critical Rankings

The single hit number six on Billboard Alternative / Modern Rock Tracks, number ten on Mainstream Rock, number 89 on the Hot 100, and number 24 on the UK Singles Chart. Australia certified it Gold (35,000+ shipments). Lloyd called it Korn’s most popular song; by 8 July 1999 it ranked as the ninth most-infringed song on the early Internet. Spin ranked it the sixth-top single of 1999 and, in 2017, number one on a list of the 30 greatest nu metal songs. VH1 placed it at 23 on “40 Greatest Metal Songs,” 69 on “100 Greatest Songs of the 90s,” and 48 on “100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs.” Loudwire (2019) ranked it number one among 50 greatest Korn songs; Kerrang (2021) put it at number four of 20. Across award bodies it collected wins from MTV, Billboard, Grammy, and Metal Edge, with further nominations from MuchMusic, Edison, California Music Awards, and Spin readers’ polls. Mexican station 91X ranked it 7th on its “Top 91 of 1999.”

Reception Detail

iTunes-era commentary noted that producers Wright and Thompson brought “a brighter, sharper sheen to Korn’s sound,” which helped make huge hits out of “Freak on a Leash.” AllMusic editors flagged the track; David Fricke described Davis’s “caged-animal babble” as a “Busta Rhymes-in-Bellevue outburst.” Yahoo Music emphasized that Davis delves into personal demons here. Critical consensus treated the song as both radio weapon and psychological self-portrait: the leash is fame; the freak is the frontman who will not stay polite inside it.

Award math is dense even by late-90s standards. The song and video together took roughly half a dozen major wins against roughly seventeen nominations, spanning MTV Video Music Awards (Best Rock Video, Best Editing, plus nominations including Best Direction), a Billboard award, the Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video, Metal Edge Readers’ Choice for Music Video of the Year, plus nods from MuchMusic, Dutch Edison awards, California Music Awards / Bammies lineage, and Spin readers’ polls. That spread—teen TRL plus Grammy craft plus metal magazine readers—shows how completely the single occupied 1999’s hard-rock lane.

Media Appearances

In early February 1999 a Puma Super Bowl pre-game ad mixed Korn’s live performance with Serena Williams and Vince Carter—corporate sports spectacle using the same “freak” energy the band sold as outsider rage. The song appears briefly in a 2007 Simpsons episode, “Stop! Or My Dog Will Shoot,” as Santa’s Little Helper hunts Homer in a corn maze. In 2008 it shipped in Guitar Hero World Tour, teaching a new console generation the riff and the title’s choke-chain joke. Those placements kept the leash metaphor circulating outside pure nu metal fandom long after Family Values Tour shirts faded.

Leash, Fame, and Kink Imagery

Head’s “kinky dominatrix” gloss and Davis’s industry-prostitute thesis are the BDSM-relevant core. A leash is classic power-exchange hardware; calling yourself a freak on one eroticizes control and display. The image is not a dungeon tutorial—there is no negotiation checklist in the bridge—but it is unmistakable collar language: someone holds the other end, and the “freak” is both proud of and trapped by that hold. Davis redirects the image at managers, media, and the fame machine that walks the artist on a short lead. Radio’s demand to cut the noisy mid-song break becomes part of the metaphor: even the arrangement was collared for commercial play.

The video’s trapped bullet and caged-animal vocal underline containment and release. Davis’s gibberish-syllable breakdown reads, in Lloyd’s framing, as resistance to being “shaped or conditioned by utterances of others”—the submissive who still snarls, or the star who still wants off the lead. For kink playlists the track works as public SM metaphor without a dungeon set: leather nights have long borrowed industrial and nu metal for exactly this mood—anger, ownership, spectacle, and the erotic charge of being displayed as dangerous. At the same time the primary lyric target remains the music business. That double exposure is why the song lands on BDSM media maps and on pure rock-history lists without contradiction.

Related topics: songs about BDSM, Korn Follow the Leader, leash and collar imagery in rock, fame-as-prostitution narratives, Todd McFarlane’s crossover into music video, TRL-era award culture, and 1990s music-video peaks. Furman’s Korn: Life in the Pit (2000, ISBN 0-312-25396-6) remains a useful band-era source. Whether you came for the Grammy video, the Amy Lee acoustic, or the dominatrix-leash title, “Freak on a Leash” is still the song that put Korn’s choke-chain metaphor on TRL every afternoon—and kept the word “leash” in mainstream rock’s sexual vocabulary for a generation of listeners who never set foot in a leather bar.
