Fifty Shades is an adult erotic BDSM romance franchise created by British writer E. L. James. It began as fan fiction for Stephenie Meyer’s young-adult Twilight series, then was rewritten as original fiction and published as the novel Fifty Shades of Grey. The franchise grew into an original novel trilogy plus two later companion novels from Christian’s point of view, and a three-film Hollywood trilogy. Whatever critics think of the prose, it is the single most commercially visible BDSM-branded romance product of the 2010s.

The original trilogy—Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed—started life as the Twilight fanfic Master of the Universe, written under the name Snowqueen Icedragon (also styled Snowdragons Icequeen in some accounts).
