Fifty Shades Freed: Marriage, a Pregnancy, and Jack Hyde

Fifty Shades Freed is the last book in E. L. James’s erotic romance trilogy. The paperback appeared in April 2012. After she accepts his proposal, Anastasia Steele has to adjust to married life with Christian Grey. The fight is no longer the BDSM clauses. Both of them are adults. The fight moves off BDSM clauses and onto her surname, her freedom at work, and who she is allowed to see. He is angry that she keeps her maiden name at work. She starts using Grey. The control shows up in the name, then in the rest of the day.

Aspen, and Elena Lincoln

His possessiveness peaks when Ana goes drinking with her friend Kate against his wishes. He gives in, and he surprises her with a trip to Aspen. On that trip Elliot proposes to Kate. Ana’s stepfather, Ray, comes out of a coma after a car accident and is moved to Seattle to recover. Christian gives Ana a charm bracelet marked with firsts from their relationship, and a car. Then she learns she is pregnant. He accuses her of doing it on purpose. He will not accept that the child might be a girl. A text from his former lover Elena Lincoln brings the origin story back: the book says she seduced him at fifteen and introduced him to BDSM. In the series she is written as the source of his dominance. That is plot. It is not a model to copy.

The kidnapping

While Christian is away on business, Ana’s former boss Jack Hyde kidnaps Mia Grey and demands $5 million. Ana fakes illness, slips her bodyguard Taylor, takes a gun, and goes to the bank. At the hideout she is faced with Hyde and his accomplice, her coworker Elizabeth Morgan. She swaps phones, shoots Hyde in the leg during the fight, and passes out. She wakes in hospital three days later. She and Christian reconcile. He stops refusing the idea of being a father and accepts it. A private investigator finds that Christian and Hyde passed through the same foster family. Christian tells Ana that Elena helped him out of memories of his birth mother and helped him control his life. When he learns that Elena’s ex-husband, Eric Lincoln, bailed Hyde out of jail out of spite, Christian buys Eric’s logging company to retaliate. Elizabeth tells the police that Hyde coerced her.

The ending, and the film date

Seven months later Ana and Christian have a son, Theodore Raymond Grey. Two years after that Ana is six months pregnant, and Elliot and Kate have a daughter. The book closes on BDSM sex and then a family celebration. The film opened on 9 February 2018. Universal had already said the two sequels would shoot back to back. As a commercial ending, the novel spends its weight on true love and parenthood softening a BDSM personality. It does not show peer education inside a community. The kidnapping, the gun, and the ransom are novel plot, not a method. The power exchange stays in the series’ soft-focus register.
