Entrails of a Virgin, Japanese title 処女のはらわた, Shōjo no harawata, is a 1986 Japanese horror film. Inside pink film it belongs to splatter-eros: softcore sex welded to gore. Kazuo “Gaira” Komizu directed it. It was a box-office success at home, and in the 1980s it became an underground trophy for Western gore fans who traded black-market VHS copies. Those tapes were usually poor quality and had no English subtitles.
A group of photographers and their models go to a forest retreat. The performers, and the characters, are adults in a pink film. The 処女 in the title is the film’s name. It does not mean the piece is about minors. On the retreat they play at S&M and have a lot of softcore sex. Most of the sex scenes are fogged under the Japanese censorship rules of the time. One by one they are killed by a filth-covered “demon” with an unnaturally large penis. The impaling, hanging, and beheading in the film are gore beats in a horror plot. They are not a lesson in suspension, and the movie is not a consent fantasy. In the end the crew is dead. Only the lead actress, Rei, played by Saeko Kizuki, survives. She is heavily pregnant with the demon’s child. Looking over the sea, she decides she is looking forward to seeing what comes out of her. Then the rock formations around her burst into flame.
How Komizu flipped the slasher formula
Through the 1980s, slasher directors had been loading more sex into body-count movies. Working inside the pink-film system, Komizu reversed that. He did not merely add sex to horror. He injected horror into softcore pornography. The splatter-eros bet paid off commercially. The short run of related titles also includes the more graphic, harder Entrails of a Beautiful Woman (1986) and Female Inquisitor (1987). Together they show a director pushing pink production values into gore and sexual extremity that mainstream Japanese softcore usually only implied.
Patrick Galloway, in Asia Shock: Horror and Dark Cinema from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand, argues that Komizu’s mix of sex and horror works as a film. He describes it as “essentially one long fuck-fest interspersed with the occasional impaling, hanging or beheading,” and he notes a misanthropy reminiscent of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Diabolique. The pieces sit together as an uncomfortable experience that is hard to look away from. Coverage in DVD Verdict, Fangoria’s DVD Dungeon, and Japanese Cinema Encyclopedia: The Sex Films treats the film as a specimen of 1980s Japanese erotic-horror trash that stuck around.
With its sequel, Entrails of a Virgin circulated for years as a low-quality black-market VHS classic. An official DVD came first from the Japan Shock label, in PAL, and later as a restored widescreen NTSC edition from Synapse Films. For anyone who wants the fogged pink-era transfer without multi-generation tape mush, the Synapse restoration is the legitimate route. It is not a rope-technique classic. What it leaves is pink S&M foreplay consumed by a demon assault and by dread of that pregnancy, and Rei as the face holding a monstrous pregnancy on an apocalyptic shore.
