Cool Devices: Eleven Extreme BDSM Hentai OVAs

Cool Devices is an eleven-episode hentai OVA built almost entirely on extreme BDSM, fetish set pieces, and production values that sat above average for the time. Each episode is billed as an operation. There is no continuous plot. The anthology let studios rotate character designs, kinks, and tone: romantic SM awakening, trafficking horror, drug-rape tragedy, isekai slave epics, idol corruption. Western fans still treat it as a landmark of 1990s dark erotic anime, prettier and meaner than the usual OVA, and radioactive enough that Canadian import rules have treated it as prohibited sexual exploitation material. Broadway released the Japanese DVDs. Critical Mass Video licensed the series in August 1998 and, on November 3, shipped episode one and a full box set. Later 10th Anniversary sets were the first editions with an English dub. Jonathan Clements and Helen McCarthy’s Anime Encyclopedia gives it a short entry. What follows is a collector’s map of themes, not a beat-by-beat porn transcript. On-screen non-consent, drugs, and trafficking are fantasy images. They are not a how-to, and they are not real-world SM ethics.

Unlike slice-of-life hentai comedy, Cool Devices commits to bondage, domination, non-consent and dubious-consent framing, body-modification fantasy, surveillance, drugs, and public humiliation. Animation and design ambition sit above many contemporary OVAs. Operation 07 carries character design by Yasuomi Umetsu, later known for Kite. You can sample single operations. The house style stays consistent: polished character art around scenarios that modern consent culture would accept only as fantasy. Non-consent, drugs, and trafficking on screen should not be confused with how negotiated SM actually works.

The operations

Operation 01, Curious Fruit, follows virgin Ai, lured from a club by an exhibitionist couple into underground SM. Bondage and rough sex “liberate” her into the lifestyle and into a relationship with a matching partner. Next to later episodes, the ending is relatively affirmative. It is the classic curious-newcomer story.

Operation 02, Sacred Girl, is set in a mansion of nightly parties and CCTV voyeurism. It frames sex as a family taboo. This piece does not retell that sexual plot.

Operation 03 is three shorts. Lover Doll is an anthropomorphic rabbit sex slave and a punished catgirl. Winter Swimsuit is reluctant outdoor and bathhouse coercion with a cut suit. Enema is bathroom anal play sold as a cure for constipation. Thin plots, fetish vignettes.

Operation 04, Kirei, opens with a blue-haired woman used by men, dropped into an oubliette, and emerging as a butterfly. Vacationers Rui and Kirei find an island of uncanny locals. They have sex with each other and with the locals, and the ending is gang rape plus the same metamorphosis and abandonment. Beauty, tourism, and body-horror transformation are braided together.

Operations 05 and 06 are Seek. Seek I, Slave Girl Marino, is based on a visual novel. Virgin Marino Okura is kidnapped into the estate of dominatrix Saki and her unnamed master. Training, forced acts, and cell time follow. The backstory says the current master is the son of Saki’s original master, a famous bondage artist whose private face was a masochistic “female dominator.” Marino ends chained, waiting for the next session. Seek II, SM Queen Saki, is a party on the anniversary of the original master’s death. Saki offers Marino and other slaves as party toys, cut with her own memories. The night flips. The slaves drag Saki into the hall and she is offered to the guests. She ends chained in her own cell. The trainer is trained. Memories of her childhood training are a minor’s experience, and they are not retold here.

Operation 07, Yellow Star, is designed by Yasuomi Umetsu and played as a crime thriller. The drug Yellow Star is a hallucinogen, a paralytic, and an extreme aphrodisiac. The sexual abuse in the episode is written onto a character in a school uniform. This article keeps the title, the designer, and the drug, and does not retell those sex scenes.

Operations 08 and 09, Slave Warrior Maya, are adapted from manga. College student Maya Mizutani is sent to another world, tricked out of her clothes by lizard-like beings, sold to Lord Estilgar, and put through experiments aimed at sex slavery. A hidden destructive power lets her escape and draws warring human and alien factions. Recapture brings more experiments and a forced hermaphroditic transformation. In the second part a dominatrix is sent to break her. Prophecy investigators close in. Fellow slave Leyna appears. Escape fails. Leyna is punished sexually. A parasitic mass is implanted to lower Maya’s inhibitions and force sex with Leyna, until Maya’s power fully wakes and she becomes the prophesied warrior. Body horror, prophecy, and domination camps share the frame.

Operation 10, Binding: magazine writer Masaki Hoshino dreams of a stranger, Miyuki, then his train stalls. Theft and a landslide strand him. He follows a girl to a mansion of a mistress and slave women, watches, and joins the SM. He survives a quake with one companion, then wakes still on the train, the sketchbook showing the girl. Dream logic, a writer’s fantasy, and a leather-house look.

Operation 11, Fallen Angel Rina, targets pop idol Rina Yuki. Angel Productions, mob-adjacent and in the flesh trade, uses her hospitalized father’s debt to rebrand her through public molestation scenarios, sex-shop theater, and cinema masturbation, then auctions her as a BDSM slave for 580 million yen, about 5.9 million US dollars. Six months later she is back on stage. Her father, it turns out, died during the training. She breaks mid-performance into masturbation at the microphone and a vacant collapse as the crowd rushes the stage. The idol business is drawn as a literal flesh market.

Voices and the English dub

Japanese credits include Ryoka Yuzuki as Ai, Ikue Ohtani, Kaoru Shimamura as Rui, Sumie Baba as Kirei, Kumiko Nishihara as Maya, Masako Katsuki, Mika Kanai, and Yōko Asada as Marino and the catgirl, among others. On the English dub, Eva Christensen covers several leads, including Rui and Marino. Petra Kosic plays Kirei and Maya. Margeaux Heartman plays Ayana and Leyna. Laura Lawless plays Rina. Brandi Delmar plays Saki. A large supporting slate sits around them. Ayana appears here only as a name on that dub list. Her episode’s sex plot is not opened up. Collectors tracking late-1990s and 2000s hentai dubbing still use these names.

What the series is for, and what it is not

Cool Devices is not a consent manual. It is a time capsule of 1990s Japanese erotic animation, from years when OVA money still paid for lavish fetish set pieces. Club initiation, CCTV voyeurism, professional dominatrix houses, drug-facilitated abuse, isekai enslavement, and idol degradation map onto porn genres that still sell. Continuity is thin on purpose. Only Seek and Maya are true two-parters. Yellow Star, Binding, and Fallen Angel Rina are self-contained shorts.

Calling episodes operations frames each short as a job inside a different fetish problem, not as chapters of one heroine. Directors, designers, and writers could rotate because there was almost no continuity to break. Compared with cheaper hentai of the same years, Cool Devices spent more on fluid animation, backgrounds, costume, leather, chains, medical-restraint looks, and fantasy architecture. Critical Mass Video’s English localization, including the later dubbed anniversary sets, put that package on North American adult shelves in the VHS and DVD years.
