In American slang, “Who’s your daddy?” is a sharp rhetorical boast of dominance over the person who has to hear it. In a bedroom, or in BDSM roleplay, it is dirty talk. One adult partner is cast as the authoritative “daddy.” The other answers to that power. There is no blood relation in the script, and it is not a parent and a child. The couple decides what the power is: sexual, financial, protective, or humiliating. Outside kink the same line shows up as sports trash talk or as swagger at work. Inside kink it is classic dominance-and-submission language with a paternal edge.
The line is older than that bedroom use. The Historical Dictionary of American Slang traces it to 1681, when sex workers asked one another who their procurer was. Literally: who is the man running the business. The brothel question shed that setting as the phrase moved into pop culture.
The modern sexual use is often traced to 1980s radio shock jock Doug Tracht, who put the line into sexually suggestive skits. Tracht has said the version he heard first was not sexual. It was in the 1968 Zombies song “Time of the Season”: “What’s your name? Who’s your daddy? Is he rich like me?” He described his own move as converting the phrase so it had a spicy connotation. Brothel logistics, then a pop lyric, then filth on the radio: that path is why a line this old keeps getting recycled in film and television as a familiar adult power game.
