Twittering Birds Never Fly (囀る鳥は羽ばたかない) is a Japanese boys’ love manga by Kou Yoneda. It runs heavy sadomasochism, trauma, and power exchange through a yakuza world, serialized since August 2011 in the BL magazine ihr HertZ, formerly HertZ. This is not soft romance. It is hypersexual fiction for adult readers: masochism, scars left by childhood abuse, impotence, and control games inside an exaggeratedly masculine criminal setting.
The story follows Yashiro (矢代), a young high-ranking yakuza boss who also runs a legitimate company. His newly assigned bodyguard, Chikara Doumeki (百目鬼 力), soon learns that his employer is a hypersexual masochist. Yashiro wants Doumeki. Doumeki refuses him at first. Yashiro later finds out that Doumeki is impotent. The two fall in love slowly while dealing with personal trauma and with what the yakuza milieu expects. Desire and rank do not come apart: boss and subordinate, protector and protected, want colliding with a body that will not “perform” on command. The power exchange is emotional and sexual. Company rank is only part of it.
Yashiro looks demanding and cheerful. In private he is a masochist. Abuse by his stepfather in childhood makes close relationships hard for him. The kink is both a way of coping and a trap. Tarusuke Shingaki voices him. Doumeki is quiet and handsome, a former police officer who left the force after prison and took the bodyguard job for the money. Wataru Hatano voices him. The impotence is not a joke subplot. It decides how intimacy, control, and humiliation happen between the two of them. Kanji Kageyama (影山 莞爾, voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto) is Yashiro’s high-school friend and a doctor. By day he runs a clinic. At night he treats wounded subordinates. He has an explicit fetish for scars and scabs. Eishin Kuga (久我 瑛心, voiced by Yūki Ono) is twenty-two, an adult, a former delinquent raised in juvenile institutions, his chest covered in burn scars from an abusive childhood. His bond with Kageyama is the center of the prequel material. Takahito Misumi (voiced by Tōru Ōkawa) is Yashiro’s boss, mentor, and former lover. Atsushi Ryuuzaki (Kenta Miyake) belongs to the Matsubara yakuza. Kazuaki Hirata (Akimitsu Takase) belongs to the Shinseikai. Among the subordinates are Yuusuke Nanahara (Kazuyuki Okitsu) and Hayato Sugimoto (Takahiro Miyake), Misumi’s secretary Shizuma Amou (Takuya Satō), and, in the audio drama, Tsunakawa (Yōji Ueda). The net is mentors, former lovers, rival bosses, and scarred bodies. SM desire sits against yakuza loyalty.
The story’s ground is earlier one-shots. Volume one collects two of them. Don’t Stay Gold, first published in Drap on 31 March 2008, centers on Kuga and Kageyama. Though They Drift, They Do Not Sink, But Nor Do They Sing (漂えど沈まず、されど泣きもせず), in HertZ on 1 June 2009, covers Yashiro’s teen years and his high-school friendship with Kageyama. That material is backstory. It is not sexual content about minors. A limited edition of volume four includes the booklet Distant Flame (遠火, Tōbi), about Doumeki’s first meeting with Yashiro before Doumeki became his subordinate. As of 1 March 2021, the Japanese publisher Taiyoh Tosho had collected seven tankōbon volumes.
Frontier Works has produced an audio drama since 2013, with Shingaki as Yashiro and Hatano as Doumeki, and those core voices carry into the films. The anime film Twittering Birds Never Fly – The Clouds Gather was announced on 26 April 2019 and released on 15 February 2020, animated by Grizzly and produced by Blue Lynx. Kaori Makita directed, Hiroshi Seko wrote the script, and the score is by the piano trio H ZETTRIO. The sequel, The Storm Breaks, was announced the same day the first film opened, and a third film has also been announced. Sentai Filmworks licensed the trilogy for North American theater bookings, virtual screenings, and home video. The Clouds Gather reached Blu-ray on 2 February 2021. An original anime DVD of Don’t Stay Gold was announced on 15 February 2020, packaged with a special edition of manga volume seven on 1 March 2021, licensed by Sentai, and began streaming on HIDIVE on 10 September 2021.
The series has a wide set of translations. In North America, Juné, Digital Manga’s BL imprint, published the English editions: the first three volumes from 2014 to 2017, then a three-year gap, volume four digitally on 4 December 2020 and in print on 12 January 2021, and volumes five and six from Juné later in 2021. There are also editions in Chinese (Sharp Point Press), French (Taifu Comics), German (Manga Cult), Italian (Flashbook Edizioni), Korean (Ruvill), Polish (Wydawnictwo Kotori), and Spanish (Ediciones Tomodomo). The commercial run is large. As of February 2020 more than 1.5 million copies were in print in Japan. In 2014 Japanese bookstore employees nationally ranked it among top recommended BL titles, and it was shortlisted for the Sugoi Japan Award 2016. The S/M content was not sanded off. For BDSM and fetish readers the draw is an explicitly masochist lead, a supporting character’s scar fetish, impotence treated as a serious erotic and emotional problem, and a love that has to talk about an abuse history inside a world of violence and rank. The audio drama and the film trilogy carry that psychology into voice and image. Adult viewers get graphic sex, trauma, and crime-world brutality, rather than a sanitized teen rom-com. Consent, aftercare, and negotiation are the reader’s frame. They are not always what the characters do.
