Niku Daruma: The Hired Scene That Becomes a Flesh Doll

Niku Daruma (肉だるま), from 1998, is a landmark in Japanese adult film. English-language copies usually call it Tumbling Doll of Flesh. Tamakichi Anaru wrote it, directed it, and plays the director inside the film. It is known for extreme gore and a simulated-snuff look. Adult viewers who know the outer edge of Japanese bondage and guro cinema treat it as about as brutal as that edge gets. It is not a lifestyle BDSM manual. It is hardcore horror, disturbing on those terms, and it follows an amateur porn shoot as the shoot collapses into full-body mutilation. The events below are the film’s plot, not instructions.

Two hired performers carry the story: Kanako Ooba as Kana, and Kikurin as Kiku. They are hired to make an amateur porn film for two men. Yuuji Kitano plays the cameraman. As the shoot goes on it takes in BDSM: breast bondage, multiple penetration with dildos, wax, flagellation, and an enema. When the roughness passes what Kana will stay for, she tries to leave the set. The director, the cameraman, and Kiku knock her out together, bind her to a bed, and strip her.

The flesh-doll sequence starts when Kiku rapes the semi-conscious Kana. To stop her screaming, the director cuts off her left leg with a meat cleaver and mutilates her tongue with a knife, a potato peeler, and shears. Kana passes out from the pain. The director injects her with drugs to keep her conscious. Her right arm and the remaining leg are cut off. Her abdomen is opened so Kiku can have sex with her innards. After he ejaculates, blood-laden semen is left on Kana’s breasts. The director hits Kiku over the head with the cleaver and stabs Kana in the face.

At the end the director castrates Kiku, makes a phone call, and leaves the cameraman filming the ruined corpses of both “stars.” The film runs the usual fake-snuff logic: consent bought with money collapses, under force, into captivity, and the endpoint is body horror without consent. For different horror-catalog releases the same film has also gone out as Judge for Yourself, Psycho, Psycho: The Snuff Files, and Psycho: The Snuff Reels. Those titles are the same flesh-doll film, not other movies.
