Squealer (2005): Jack the Zipper’s Backwoods Bondage Horror

Squealer, directed by Jack the Zipper in 2005, is an adult porn film with a horror streak. It is a typical piece of that period’s extreme gonzo: hillbilly captivity fantasy, rope, and a horror mood, shot rough and dirty and pushed by atmosphere, rather than soft romantic BDSM. Four adult women on a road trip have car trouble, take shelter in a farmhouse that looks abandoned, and have an orgy. The owners show up, a group of hillbilly cousins, and force the travelers to keep having sex. Two of the women are tied to chairs and locked in a boathouse. One gets herself loose and unties the other. While those two have sex, three of the rednecks spy on them and join. Outside, another woman is bound in the back of a truck. While the man who tied her digs a grave, she tries to run and is caught and brought back to the house. There she and two friends are used for sex. One of them is put in a sex swing.

Later a woman from the clan has sex with one of the girls, choking her and using a bag for asphyxiation. That is a high-risk act. The film contains the scene. This is not instructions for how to do it. Another orgy follows, two men and two women, and the women are urinated on before the sex starts. After one of the hillbillies climaxes, the film ends abruptly, with the women still captive. The structure is one captivity block after another: rope, the swing, the truck bed, the boathouse chairs, asphyxiation, and golden showers. The horror frame stays extreme gonzo. There is no rescue ending.

Cast

The cast comes from hardcore, not from mainstream horror. Otto Bauer plays Digger. Smokie Flame, Audrey Hollander, Jassie, and Kimberly Kane play Pinup #1 through #4. Alec Knight, Scott Lyons, Scott Nails, and Kris Slater play Cousin #1 through Cousin #4, in that order. Felix Vicious plays Pinup #5. The billing is Zipper-era gonzo: the cousins have names, and the women are numbers. There is no SSC negotiation on screen — safe, sane, and consensual. Reviews and the 2006 AVN awards

The reviews split. AVN gave it four and a half out of five, called it unrelentingly filthy, and named d.p.s, double anal, slapping, tying, gagging, spitting, and asphyxiation. AVN called it a masterpiece: porn’s answer to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in a true sense, not as a parody. The review said the look, the mood, and the music were dead-on and unlike anyone else’s, and it closed with “Jack the Zipper has slaughtered again.” Fleshbot called it “an intense little movie,” shot to be spooky and artful. XCritic scored it two out of five: atmospheric, artistic, and creepy, but “just plain repulsive,” like something serial killers use to push themselves over the edge while fantasizing about slaughter. Box Magazine found most of the sex unerotic and the horror element almost nonexistent.

The split did not stop the hardware. At the 2006 AVN Awards, Squealer won Best All-Sex Release – Video, Best Group Sex Scene – Video, and Best Oral Sex Scene – Video. Those three moved it from cult-blog praise onto industry trophies.
