Sex Machines: Motors That Thrust, Suck, and Do Not Get Tired

In BDSM, fetish, and adult film, a sex machine is a device that uses a motor for thrusting, sucking, or some other mechanical sexual motion. Vibration by itself is a different toy. The machines usually fall into two kinds: penetrative and extractive. A penetrative machine, often called a fucking machine in porn slang, turns a motor’s rotation or reciprocation into a dildo thrusting. An extractive machine is closer to an industrial milker. It attaches to a penis, a breast, or other tissue and pulls in a rhythm. For the person using one, the machine sits where bondage, hands-free endurance, remote control (teledildonics), and spectacle meet. The practical point is a steady pace that a partner, or a Domme, cannot keep up for as long.

The mechanical history people tell usually starts with Victorian medicine. Doctors used large vibrators on the clitoris to treat so-called hysteria by producing orgasm. Those clinic machines were big and strong. Around the start of the twentieth century they moved through European and American bathhouse culture, then showed up in department-store catalogs as small electric “health aids.” A machine built on purpose for sex shows up around 1900: a device that sprayed milk into the vagina to imitate ejaculation, an early mechanical fantasy of finishing from outside the body. A modern automated sex device thrusts, or it sucks and strokes. An ordinary vibrator buzzes.

Retail and specialty markets keep adding shapes. Besides vacuum pumps and calibrated erotic electrostim units, there are life-size inflatable dolls with penetrable, vibrating openings. The conference Arse Elektronika has shown new mechanical toys and also argued about what automated sex does to culture, labor, and desire. Nearby names include erotic furniture, the Sybian for women, and Venus for Men as a platform that stimulates the penis. The endurance moves off the body and into the machine, so thrusting becomes something you can watch and control.

In modification slang, rebuilt power tools have nicknames. A setup on a reciprocating-saw base may be called a fucksaw. A drill motor gets called a drilldo. A modified jigsaw gets called a jillsaw. The names are what people called the rebuilds. They are not instructions for making one. Teledildonics hooks the hardware to a web page so a partner somewhere else can drive it while it runs.

Mechanical force makes injury worse when a dildo, a mount, or a homemade frame fails. In 2009 a woman in Maryland was taken to emergency care after the blade of a homemade machine cut through a plastic dildo and caused severe vaginal injury. Industrial tool bases, improvised shafts, and unguarded metal are not toys until they have been designed and guarded as toys. For BDSM use, especially bondage or an endurance scene, the people involved need an emergency stop, a limit on range, a plan for lube, and a clear answer to who holds the power switch. The people are adults who have agreed. If the person receiving is fixed in place, that talk matters more, not less.

The machines also show up as spectacle. In 2007 Kink.com introduced Fuckzilla, a machine that combined a thrusting dildo with a licking apparatus. In 2019 monochrom showed Nekropneum Fuckenbrust Neckhammer 40k at NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf. On screen, an episode of Boston Legal puts a steam-driven, piston-powered Victorian “hysteria machine” into a courtroom as erotic history. In Burn After Reading a Treasury agent builds a pedal-powered “dildo chair.” The porn site Fucking Machines is both a content brand and a cultural reference for mechanical fucking. In 2011 psychologist J. Michael Bailey ran a live classroom demonstration of a sex machine at Northwestern University. The coverage turned into a fight about academic freedom, tenure, and what counts as an appropriate course.

Inside power exchange the machine is often a third party. Sometimes a Domme’s hand is on the dial. Sometimes the unit runs on its own. As fetish hardware it can be careful engineering or a rough shop tool. Used with ordinary mechanical sense, and with consent, it extends what someone already wants. Used as an unguarded industrial tool, it is an emergency-room case waiting to happen.
