Sade (2000): Benoît Jacquot’s Marquis in the Terror

In 2000 the French director Benoît Jacquot released the historical drama Sade. Jacques Fieschi and Bernard Minoret adapted it from Serge Bramly’s novel La terreur dans le boudoir. For viewers who follow BDSM, fetish, and adult film, it is not a manual of consensual BDSM. It is a French arthouse portrait of the historical Marquis de Sade. The English-language Quills covered similar ground the same year. Jacquot’s Sade is the European counterpart.

The film is set in Paris in 1794, during the Terror. Daniel Auteuil’s Marquis is not the free libertine of the popular image. He is an aristocrat in prison under revolutionary pressure, held with other nobles at Picpus, a former monastery converted into a jail. As the Revolution closes in, the holy building works like a cage. Identity, writing, and relationships are watched inside it.

At a hearing, Sade claims he is neither a noble nor the author of Justine. That denial sets the tone. This is period cinema about the man who equated pleasure with cruelty. Auteuil’s Sade uses the denial to get through a political crisis, caught between politics and art.

The cast is a run of French names. Daniel Auteuil plays the Marquis de Sade. Marianne Denicourt plays Marie-Constance Quesnet / Sensible. Jeanne Balibar plays Madame Santero. Grégoire Colin plays Fournier. Isild Le Besco plays Emilie de Lancris. Jean-Pierre Cassel plays the Vicomte de Lancris. Dominique Reymond plays Madame de Lancris. Sylvie Testud plays Renée de Sade. Philippe Duquesne plays Coignard. François Levantal plays Latour.

For anyone mapping Sade on screen, the film is a serious window, not pulp adult video. It catches the man whose name became sadism at a particular historical moment: fear, power, and the room left for writing when the state has already locked the door. It is still not a guide to consensual play.
