Jill Rips: Dolph Lundgren in a Bondage-Tinged Thriller

Jill Rips, also released as Jill the Ripper and as Tied Up, is a 2000 American thriller with bondage worked into the crime atmosphere. Anthony Hickox directed. Dolph Lundgren stars. It is adapted from a 1987 novel by the Scottish writer Frederic Lindsay. A hard-boiled investigation is dropped into a murder underground of restraint and discipline. It is closer to neo-noir exploitation than to an SSC lesson. It is one mainstream film that uses kink as mood. The plot is fiction, not a set of instructions.

Boston, 1977

The story is set in Boston in 1977. Former cop Matt Sorenson comes back from out of town for the funeral of his powerful younger brother, Michael. The dead man bears elaborate binding, cuts, and stab wounds, some of them made after death. The binding reads as bondage play. Matt starts looking for the killer. His first suspect is the construction magnate “Big Jim” Conway. Michael had opposed Conway on a subway project. Matt is also drawn toward Michael’s widow, Irene. The marriage was only six months old.

Other men die in a similar way, and they have been photographed with a masked sex worker. The press names her “Jill the Ripper.” To connect his brother’s death, Conway, and Irene, Matt reluctantly enters the local underground of bondage and discipline. The detective’s move into clubs and professional dominance is the engine of the plot. Everyone in the story is an adult.

The novel’s reputation, then the discs

The novel set the tone the film inherited. The BBC programme Today called it harrowing and still “the best novel of its kind for years,” for a grim poetic vision. The Sunday Times found it violent, vicious, and brutal, a succubus on the imagination. The Daily Express called it taut and hard to put down. For viewers who watch BDSM and fetish material, the restraint is both a murder signature and a tourist pass through a subculture. It sits on the crime shelf beside better-known erotic thrillers.

HBO premiered the film in January 2000 under the alternate title Tied Up. Columbia TriStar issued the DVD on 4 July 2000, as Jill the Ripper in some markets and as Jill Rips in others. In February 2024 Scream Factory released a website-exclusive limited Blu-ray under the original title Jill Rips. The cult interest has lasted.
