Holy Trinity is a 2019 American comedy, and the first feature Molly Hewitt wrote, produced, directed, and starred in. Hewitt plays Trinity, a working dominatrix. She inhales from an aerosol can nobody can explain, and finds she can talk to the dead. Theo Germaine plays Baby, Trinity’s partner and a musician. Joe Swanberg executive produced. Heather Lynn plays Carol. Imp Queen appears as themself.
The film screened at Outfest, an LGBTQ festival, in July 2019, and at the New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Film Festival that October. It puts day-to-day kink work, supernatural absurdity, spiritual questions, and a relationship in one story, and asks whether an affirmative spirituality can share a life with power exchange. The sex and the power exchange are between adults.
On Rotten Tomatoes, 11 reviews sit at 82% positive, with an average of 6.4/10. Beandrea July in The Hollywood Reporter criticized some of the dialogue, but said the film celebrates a sex-positive, kink-positive life and looks at how an affirmative spirituality fits into it. Richard Roeper in the Chicago Sun-Times gave it three stars out of four, praising Hewitt’s performance and calling the movie an adventure with quite a bit of kink in it. Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune was cooler, two out of four: bracingly sex-positive in every direction, and a bit flat as a performance vehicle. Cody Corrall in the Chicago Reader gave three out of four. The film may not balance every theme, but it pushes an audience to think about the politics of kink, about becoming a god, and about putting yourself lower between people and inside social frameworks. Corrall’s colleague Ben Sachs liked the production design. He thought plenty of scenes drag, that the pacing feels indifferent, and that Hewitt still had room to grow as a storyteller. Jude Dry at IndieWire put Holy Trinity on a 2019 list of LGBTQ films not to miss.
