Hellraiser: Judgment is a 2018 American horror film written and directed by Gary J. Tunnicliffe, based on Clive Barker’s characters—the tenth Hellraiser film. It stars Damon Carney, Randy Wayne, Alexandra Harris, Heather Langenkamp, and Paul T. Taylor as Pinhead, with Tunnicliffe as the Auditor. In Hell, Pinhead and the Auditor discuss adapting soul harvest as technology makes puzzle gateways obsolete. On Earth, detective brothers Sean and David Carter and Christine Egerton hunt the Preceptor, whose murders follow the Ten Commandments. A victim link leads to missing criminal Karl Watkins near an abandoned house. Sean investigates, black out, and wakes in the Inquisition’s domain. As they prepare judgment on his sins, angel Jophiel orders his release. Sean escapes with a stolen puzzle box; the Auditor consults Pinhead.
Sean and David find no Hell trace at the house. Night visions of Cenobites promise “judgment and redemption” to anyone who opens the box. GPS from a phone left in a victim’s body leads to the Preceptor’s hideout: Sean incapacitates Christine and reveals he is the killer. David arrives; Sean holds wife Alison hostage over her affair, forces David and Alison to open the box at gunpoint, and tries to trade them to Pinhead for his soul. Pinhead refuses a deal—another hell faction wants Sean. The Auditor declares him guilty. Jophiel claims Sean serves heaven’s plan to frighten sinners; Pinhead has Christine kill Sean and spitefully destroys Jophiel. God punishes Pinhead by expelling him to walk Earth as a mortal man. Post-credits: Mormon missionaries in Germany meet the Auditor at a door.

Development: From Holy War to Rights Deadline
Dimension has long paired Hellraiser and Children of the Corn rights retention (both series launched for the company in the early ’90s). Offered Revelations, he wrote it but directed Scream 4 instead. Five years after missing Revelations, another rights deadline brought Dimension back. Filming, Effects, Cuts
Three weeks in Oklahoma, ~30–35 complex camera setups daily, never over thirteen-hour days. Locations: derelict house, bar, luxury apartment/penthouse, church, playground, alleys, built sets. Taylor shot in an “offices of hell” studio set. Same city/time as Children of the Corn: Runaway (Gulager directing). Three weeks edit; Deron Johnson score (Reznor/Seven influence) replaced hoped-for Young-theme cues for budget. Cenobite domain coded blue; Inquisition “piss” yellow. Studio cut extreme sex and violence: longer Watkins skinning, Cleaner material, more intense Sean/Alison sex with Cenobite cutaways and false endings (including a post-orgasm David hallucination), longer alley nightmare with Alison in a pig-mask threesome. Original Jury ate the Assessor’s regurgitated pages. Tunnicliffe said a 10–15 minute longer cut might be “TOO much.”
Makeup: Mike Regan and Mike Measimer; bleached-wood-and-copper Lament Configuration; Auditor cuts borrowed from Tunnicliffe’s unused Pinhead redesign for Pascal Laugier’s cancelled remake. Pinhead and the Auditor open the film debating obsolescence: human technology is making puzzle gateways less reliable as harvest tools. That premise reframes the entire late series—ashcan sequels and all—as symptoms of a Hell that must modernize its procurement. Jophiel’s angelic intervention puts heaven on the Hellraiser board for the first time, arguing Sean’s Commandment murders serve divine fear; Pinhead’s spiteful destruction of the angel earns him the worst punishment a king of pain can receive: mortality. Tunnicliffe has said he loved Hellbound’s birth of Pinhead and wanted the inverse—if you are king, the worst fate is to be stripped and thrown among paupers. Budget blocked full on-screen de-pinning; the idea remains: collar removed, grid still scarred into a human face in the rain.
Taylor’s Pinhead and Tunnicliffe’s Auditor
Paul T. Taylor’s Pinhead was designed not to imitate Bradley’s every cadence but to offer regal boredom, cold sarcasm, and stillness—economy of motion because the image is already terrifying. Longer silver pins, deeper cuts, solid black eyes, ragged robe, chain-mail butcher skirt, and a single streamlined skinning tool replaced the crowded weapon rack of earlier sequels. The Auditor’s chaotic self-lacerations contrast the Cenobites’ ordered grid; his “Für Elise” music box is a scrap of human comfort in a clerk of damnation. Tunnicliffe played the role partly for scheduling (prosthetics applied early; doubles available) and partly because he loved the franchise enough to risk acting in it—“worst case, I can dub myself later.”
$350,000 and three weeks in Oklahoma produced a denser mythology than several higher-budget sequels, even as police-procedural plotting drew Seven comparisons and left some critics cold. Home sales under half a million dollars mark it as a niche rights-era product—yet for kink-horror completists it is the film that asked what Hell’s bureaucracy looks like when the hooks are only one department, and what happens when the Hell Priest forgets he is also an employee of a larger system that can fire him into flesh.
