Guy Baldwin, born in 1946, lives in Los Angeles and is openly gay. He is a psychotherapist, author, activist, and educator, and one of the public intellectuals of modern leather. His clinical position is steady: putting non-injurious sadomasochism into a consenting sexuality — bondage, flagellation, domination, submission — does not by itself equal mental illness or psycho-sexual dysfunction. That stance, plus his title history and his books, is why BDSM readers still treat him as an authority.
The KAP list
In 1982 Baldwin built the Kink Aware Professionals list, the KAP list. It is a database of therapists, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals who understand BDSM and will not pathologize players on sight. It later expanded under the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom into the Kink And Poly Aware Professionals Directory. For someone who needs care and does not want a diagnosis of “abnormal” at the door, the KAP list is still a practical lifeline.
Two titles at once
In 1989 Baldwin held Mr. National Leather Association and International Mr. Leather at the same time. He is still the only Mr. National Leather Association titleholder to have also won International Mr. Leather. The double crown made him a contest-leather figure and a community educator. He has long sat on the Board of Governors of the Leather Hall of Fame. Between 2009 and 2019 he was a special guest at the Master/slave Conference more than once. His role in M/s education outlasted the contest years.
Drummer, Ties That Bind, SlaveCraft
From 1986 to 1993 he wrote a monthly column in Drummer. Those pieces became Ties That Bind, published in 1993. The bibliography runs from clinical comment to contest rules to practical craft. The Leather Contest Guide lays out how to run a contest fairly and how to judge. SlaveCraft: Roadmaps for Erotic Servitude is a working map of erotic service: principles, skills, and tools, not fantasy prose alone. He also wrote forewords for Race Bannon’s Learning the Ropes and Joseph Bean’s Leathersex Q&A.
Old Guard, argued over on purpose
A Second Coming Out and his essays on the Old Guard are among the most cited and most fought-over texts in leather history. He described the origins, mystique, and rules of classical leather culture without insisting that a bar in 1991 still had to run on a 1950s pattern. Readers use the essays as memory: how mentorship, formality, and erotic service organized gay male SM life. Across short fiction and long commentary, the same career holds clinical legitimacy, contest leather, Old Guard history, and practical M/s craft.
Awards
The awards are the community saying it back. They include the 1994 Pantheon of Leather Southern California Regional Award, the 2001 Pantheon of Leather Lifetime Achievement Award, induction into the Society of Janus Hall of Fame in 2004, and the 2008 Leather Leadership Award from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. In 2000 the Leather Archives and Museum named him a Centurion. In 2009 the Master/slave Conference created a Heritage Award in his name. In 2016 he received the Tom of Finland Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. The list marks him as a teacher the community kept.
