Gushing over Magical Girls (Japanese: 魔法少女にあこがれて, Mahō Shōjo ni Akogarete; also known as I Admire Magical Girls, and…) is a Japanese magical-girl manga by Akihiro Ononaka. Serialization began on Takeshobo’s Storia Dash site in March 2019; by January 2024 eleven tankōbon volumes were out. J-Novel Club holds the English license. An anime TV adaptation by Asahi Production aired January–March 2024 (Sentai Filmworks / HIDIVE outside Japan); a second season has been announced. For adult anime and BDSM-adjacent viewers, the hook is explicit: a shy magical-girl fangirl becomes a succubus-coded villaness who discovers she loves torturing the heroines she once worshiped—mahou shoujo grammar rewritten as sadistic power exchange, with heavy TV censorship and uncensored home video.
Plot: From Admiration to Magia Baiser
Utena Hiiragi is an introverted schoolgirl who idolizes Tres Magia, the beautiful trio defending her town. Mascot Venalita offers her powers—but enrolls her as an evil general of the organization Enormita rather than as a justice magical girl. Forced to fight her idols, Utena discovers a hidden sadistic streak and comes to revel in torturing them. Magical transformation hides true identities both ways: Tres Magia and Enormita generally do not know each other’s civilian faces. After defeating Lord Enorme, Utena grows stronger and eventually becomes Enormita’s new leader. The series keeps magical-girl transformation spectacle while centering villainess desire, bondage-adjacent “torture,” and the erotic charge of corrupting pure heroines.

- Kiwi Araga / Leoparde (CV: Aoi Koga) — loves Utena, transfers to her school; civilian internet celebrity who resents Tres Magia for stealing fans; military motif, guns and explosives; stronger form vs Sister.
- Korisu Morino / Nero Alice (CV: Shiori Sugiura) — quiet elementary-schooler, toy-obsessed; Alice motif; traps people in dollhouses, messes with minds, giant plush toys.

- Sayo Minakami / Magia Azure (CV: Mayuko Kazama) — shrine maiden, loves peace and cute outfits; secret masochistic streak and affinity for Magia Baiser; water/ice sword; La Veritas form Maiden of Hoarfrost powers up by taking hits—masochism as combat system.

- Vatz (CV: Kana Asumi) — white counterpart mascot to black Venalita.
Shio-chans / Lord Enorme Arc
Michiko Tanaka / Lord Enorme / later Imitatio (Shion Imita) (CV: Yoko Hikasa) is the former Enormita leader who defected to found the Lord Squad and later the Shio-chans. As Lord Enorme she makes monsters from black goop. Humiliatingly beaten by Utena and ambushed by Sister Gigant, she is nursed by Randa, steals a magical-girl item to become Imitatio (large sword, potions; La Veritas form used to pass as Shion), and eventually reforms into a true magical girl to protect Randa. Momo Momomori / Pantano Pesca indulges perverted behavior, earth golems. Randa Tada / Berserga is a masochistic member, formerly Magia Blanc, who fell for Michiko after being spared as “too weak” to hunt; blood weapons. The arc keeps revenge, humiliation, and M/s-adjacent loyalty inside magical-girl costume grammar.
Manga, Anime Production, Censorship
Ononaka’s manga ran on Storia Dash from 29 March 2019 and briefly in Manga Life Storia until that magazine died in July 2019. Eleven volumes by January 2024; J-Novel Club English pre-pub from March 2022 (Coolmic earlier ran smartphone “episodes” under the longer English title). On 15 March 2024 a hiatus was announced for Ononaka’s health. The manga was among 50 nominees for the 6th Next Manga Awards web category (2020).
Anime announced 16 March 2023: Asahi Production; directors Masato Suzuki and Atsushi Ōtsuki; series composition Noboru Kimura; character designs Yasuka Otakil; music Yasuharu Takanashi, Akinari Suzuki, Johannes Nilsson. Aired 3 January–27 March 2024 on AT-X and other nets. Broadcast TV was censored; AT-X/streaming ran partial uncensored picture with censored audio; full uncensored picture and audio reserved for home media—standard Japanese adult-adjacent magical-girl compromise. OP: “My Dream Girls” by Nacherry (Chiemi Tanaka & Natsumi Murakami). ED: “Togetoge Sadistic” by Fūka Izumi, Aoi Koga, Shiori Sugiura (plus Aisaka and Tsuda from ep. 10). Sentai Filmworks licensed NA/AU/British Isles for HIDIVE and Section23 home video, simulcasting the AT-X cut. Second season announced at an event on 5 October 2024.
For bdsmwild readers the series is mahou shoujo as villainess femdom playground: crop, torture play against pure heroines, Azure’s on-screen masochism, Fallen Nurse corruption aesthetics, and a production pipeline that treats the smut as sellable enough for two seasons while still needing the censor’s scissors on free-to-air TV. Related paths: magical girl genre deconstruction, yuri-adjacent villainess desire, and Japanese TV vs Blu-ray censorship of kink content.
BDSM Reading of the Magical-Girl Machine
Standard mahou shoujo grammar already contains transformation, costumes, mascots who recruit, and moral binaries of light vs dark. Ononaka’s twist is to hand the recruitment to the dark side and make the protagonist’s hidden sadism the pleasure center of the show. Magia Baiser’s crop-as-wand is barely subtext: a dominatrix tool that spawns monsters for “torture” set pieces against women Utena still aesthetically loves. Azure’s arc—masochistic draw toward Baiser, then a power-up that literally feeds on taking hits—reads as kink physics inside battle shonen-adjacent rules. Magenta’s Fallen Nurse form sexualizes caretaking (healing twisted into perversion) after Baiser’s magic corrupts her—corruption fantasy as power-up path. Sulfur’s knuckledusters keep a sadistic physicality on the “hero” side too, so violence is not monopolized by Enormita.
Identity secrecy (heroes and villains not recognizing civilian selves) is classic genre and also a closet/double-life metaphor familiar to kink readers who pass as “normal” at school or work. Venalita’s blackmail-via-social-video origin is ugly non-consent framing for how Utena enters villainy; the series then lets her own the role—problematic as ethics, central as erotic plot. Lord Enorme’s humiliation, Sister Gigant’s secret loyalty, and Randa’s masochistic devotion to her former hunter expand the cast into a web of dominance, service, and revenge rather than a single couple dynamic. Second-season confirmation signals the market for this mix: cute magical-girl designs plus explicit sadistic play, sold with TV soft-censorship and disc uncensorship as the standard Japanese adult-adjacent pipeline.
Production Notes for Viewers and Collectors
Staff credits worth tracking: dual directors Suzuki and Ōtsuki; Kimura on series composition; Otakil designs; Takanashi/Suzuki/Nilsson music. Theme songs brand the tone—“My Dream Girls” for idol-magical surface, “Togetoge Sadistic” (“thorny sadistic”) for the villainess core, sung by Baiser/Leoparde/Nero Alice’s voice actresses. HIDIVE’s simulcast of the AT-X version means international streamers saw the partially uncensored picture path; home video is the full target for uncut collectors. Manga hiatus for creator health (March 2024) is part of the production record, not a rumor. English readers can follow J-Novel Club volumes; the older Coolmic smartphone serialization under the longer title is a separate early access path. For kink-anime lists, put this next to other magical-girl deconstructions—but mark the sadism/masochism content as the selling point, not an accidental side effect.
