Folsom Europe: Berlin’s September Leather and BDSM Street Fair

Every September, Berlin’s Schöneberg district hosts a street fair for BDSM and leather subculture. Folsom Europe, also called Folsom Straßenfest, has been there since 2003. It is not an indoor party. It moves the nonprofit street-fair model of San Francisco’s Folsom Street Fair onto the European continent. For the weekend, Fuggerstrasse and Welserstrasse, near Wittenbergplatz, become a corridor of public fetish culture. There is no wall around it. Adults gather at outdoor stages, booths, and display areas, in the kind of crowd density a street fair has and a ticketed dungeon party does not.

The point of founding it was to bring that leather idea across the Atlantic. More than twenty years on, it ranks among Europe’s largest gay fetish events. With Berlin Leder und Fetisch e.V. (BLF, Berlin Leather and Fetish) and Easter Berlin, held each Easter holiday, it is part of a calendar that makes Berlin a leather-tourism capital in Europe. The draw is nightclubs and darkrooms, and it is also the energy on the street in daylight. On the map of global leather geography, Folsom Europe keeps the outdoor form and the nonprofit habit, and it shows BDSM and leather in the middle of a major city without apologizing for it.

It also raises money. Folsom Europe is the backdrop for the annual German Titleholders’ Conference, where fetish titleholders from around the world meet and raise funds for charitable organizations in Berlin. Fundraising is part of the structure, not decoration. At the gates, nuns of the Order of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence collect donations from visitors. Folsom Europe is described as the only European event where they stand at the entrance taking that money. It is the same mix of play and seriousness familiar from San Francisco leather weekends. Public kink here is entertainment that is also tied to a community.

On Berlin’s cultural map, Folsom Europe sits beside Berlin Pride, Kreuzberg Pride, and the Lesbian and Gay City Festival, but it stays on fetish rather than general LGBTQ+ parade culture. For travelers it is the European twin of the Folsom Street Fair, and a place to see the Berlin leather scene, the BLF community, and public fetish as a charity spectacle. The neighborhood those streets run through is already a walkable piece of queer history.
