The Folsom Street Fair (FSF)—often just “Folsom”—is an annual kink, leather, and alternative-sexuality street fair held on the last Sunday of September that closes San Francisco’s Leather Pride Week. It runs on Folsom Street between 8th and 13th Streets in the South of Market (SoMa) district. Founded in 1984, it is California’s third-largest single-day outdoor spectator event and the world’s largest leather event and showcase for BDSM products and culture. The fair operates as a non-profit charity: gate donations and festival fundraising (beverage booths, games, even spanking-for-donations) flow to local and national groups. For leather history, Folsom is both party and political memory—the day the Miracle Mile still owns the street.
Leather Roots: From Postwar Clubs to the Miracle Mile
Modern U.S. gay leather culture grew after 1945, when thousands of gay servicemen with blue discharges settled in port-city gay ghettos. Marlon Brando’s 1953 film The Wild One gave butch gays a look—black leather jacket, cap, boots, jeans, motorcycle if you could afford it. 1950s magazine Bizarre spread fetish imagery. San Francisco’s first proto-leather bar was the Sailor Boy Tavern (opened 1938 near the Embarcadero YMCA), serving Navy men hunting same-sex sex. Before SoMa, leather-friendly bars sat on the Embarcadero and in the Tenderloin (Jack’s On The Waterfront, On The Levee, Spur Club, Why Not, Hideaway—several raided shut).
SoMa’s first leather bar was the Tool Box (339 4th St., 1961–1971), made famous by Paul Welch’s June 1964 Life feature “Homosexuality In America”—the first national magazine deep dive on gay life. Photographer access came via Hal Call; the piece opened on Chuck Arnett’s life-size leathermen mural and branded San Francisco “The Gay Capital of America,” drawing leathermen west. Folsom’s first leather bar was Febe’s (11th and Folsom, opened 25 July 1966). The Stud opened 1966 at 1535 Folsom as a leather bar with Hells Angels history, then by 1969 a hippie-marginal dance bar with another Arnett black-light mural (moved 1987 to 399 9th). In 1967 Nick O’Demus opened A Taste of Leather inside Febe’s—one of the first in-bar leather stores (announced closure after 43 years in late 2009).
By the late 1970s Folsom’s “Miracle Mile” held nearly thirty leather bars, sex clubs, and merchants within walking distance. Landmark names, in rough founding order, included Off the Levee and The Ramrod (1968); The In Between/No Name and The Bootcamp (1971); The Barracks at 72 Hallam (1972)—a hardcore BDSM bathhouse with fantasy stage-set rooms—and the connected Red Star Saloon with new Arnett art; Folsom Prison, The Ambush, Big Town leather mall (1973); Hombre, The Catacombs (hardcore fisting), The Emporium (1975); Trading Post, The Slot (flagellation), Handball Express (fisting) (1976); The Brig, The Balcony (1977); Arena, Roundup/Watering Hole (urolagnia), Quarters, Black & Blue, Folsom Street Baths/Sutro Baths at 1015 Folsom with the banner “A rainbow of sexual preferences” (1978); Stables (cowboy dress), The Trench (hardcore watersports), Hothouse, Mister S Leather (1979); The Plunge pool bathhouse, later the Oasis dance floor (1980); and The Eagle at 398 12th St. (1981)—by 2010 SF’s oldest and largest leather bar, famous for charity barbecues and beer busts. The modern hanky code entered leather use around 1971. Embarcadero YMCA culture (jockstrap weight training, nude swimming until women could join in 1975) and the adjacent YMCA Hotel rooms for sailors fed the same circuit.
Motorcycle Clubs and the CMC Carnival
Folsom’s institutional ancestor was the CMC Carnival (California Motorcycle Club Carnival): a gay leather BDSM dance (DJs and rock band), vendor fair, and back-room sex party on the second Sunday of November, 1966–1986, most often at Seafarer’s International Union Hall (350 Fremont). Early 1970s crowds numbered in the hundreds; the last large Carnival (1982, Yellow Cab Building, Jones and Turk) drew over 4,000. Gay motorcycle clubs—mostly Harley riders on Sierra picnic runs—ran it. National first: Los Angeles Satyrs (1954). SF first: Warlocks (1960), then California Motorcycle Club (1960). Mid-60s SoMa clubs included Barbary Coasters (1966), Constantines and Cheaters (1967). Some leather people insisted you were not “real” leather without a motorcycle. Clubs also organized bar benefits; dozens of bikes lined Folsom on Miracle Mile weekends until AIDS from 1982 decimated membership. In 1979 the new lesbian club Dykes on Bikes first led the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade (later SF Pride) and has led it since; mid-80s and early-90s lesbian leatherwomen often helped care for gay leathermen with AIDS.
Why the Fair Began (1984)
Through the 1970s SoMa leatherfolk resisted city redevelopment that wanted high-rises on historically blue-collar warehouse land. AIDS in the 1980s broke that relative autonomy: bathhouses closed and bars were regulated in the name of public health starting 1984. As leather institutions collapsed, housing activists and community organizers launched a street fair to keep the community visible, raise money, and deliver safer-sex information that bars and baths had once carried. Success birthed the Up Your Alley Fair on Ringold Street in 1985 (moved to Dore Alley between Howard and Folsom in 1987). COVID-19 canceled the 2020 Folsom. Photographer Michael Rababy has written that while algorithmics and trust-fund hipsters replace a century of artists, “as the millennium tower sinks, the Folsom Street Fair stands its ground.”
Atmosphere, Scale, and Stages
Folsom is one of the few days when SM is openly encouraged in public street space—drawing players, exhibitionists, tourists, and hundreds of cameras. Costumes and play can be transgressive; many people also just eat at the food court and find the day “eye-opening.” Critics attack the bawdiness; groups such as Americans for Truth about Homosexuality make it a regular target. Organizers claim about 250,000 visitors yearly—third among California street events after the Rose Parade and SF Pride. Net proceeds from gates and beverage sales routinely exceed $300,000 for public-health, human-services, and arts charities, with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence leading gate organizing. Charity spanking booths, live BDSM demos, and a Twister stage raise more. Live stages have hosted Austra, Little Boots, Miami Horror, Ladytron (DJ), Dragonette, Imperial Teen, Berlin, the Presets, Monarchy, the English Beat, Missing Persons, MNDR, Light Asylum, Shiny Toy Guns, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, Nitzer Ebb, MEN (JD Samson), My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, the Limousines, Ladyhawke, Adult., Yacht, and more. DJ areas have featured Tony Moran, Manny Lehman, The Cucarachas (Tom Stephan), Mark Moore of S’Express. In 2006 a women’s area began (Bettie Page’s Secret → Venus’ Playground → the Playground, open to “women of every kind and all trans and non-binary folks,” plus Queer Commons). 2007 added an erotic artists’ area; 2013 added a performance-art stage for the 30th fair.
Sister Events and Awards
Folsom Street East (New York, since 1997, organized by GMSMA) is not affiliated with SF’s Folsom Street Events. Folsom Europe began in Berlin in 2003 on the same non-profit model. Toronto’s Folsom Fair North (FFN/FFNTO) ran each July from 2003 until permanent cancellation in 2008. Pantheon of Leather honored Folsom Street Events as Large Nonprofit of the Year in 2008 and 2012 (2012 tie with Cleveland Leather Awareness Weekend) and Nonprofit of the Year in 2015; the San Francisco Leathermen’s Discussion Group took Small Nonprofit in 2013. The San Francisco South of Market Leather History Alley (Ringold Alley, 2017) installs four artworks: Gayle Rubin’s granite narrative with Mike Caffee’s “Leather David” and Arnett’s Tool Box mural; standing stones naming institutions including the Fair; leather pride flag pavement; and metal bootprints for 28 community figures.
2007 “Last Supper” Poster Fight
For the 24th fair (30 September 2007), official art by FredAlert restaged Leonardo’s Last Supper with LGBT and BDSM community members—including Sister Roma—at a table draped in the leather pride flag and cluttered with toys, whips, and restraints. Conservatives called it blasphemous; media noted endless Last Supper parodies (Simpsons, Sopranos, Phish, That ’70s Show, Altman’s MASH, Boston Red Sox, Renée Cox’s Yo Mama’s Last Supper). MCC interim pastor Chris Glaser said they were “just having fun” and called the poster “tastefully and cleverly done.” Board president Andy Copper said the intent was diversity, not anti-religion, and joked future posters might riff on American Gothic, The Scream, or The Sound of Music. The Catholic League, Concerned Women for America, and Family Research Council threatened to boycott Miller Brewing for logo placement; Miller asked the logo off the poster; the League ended the boycott. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (SF) said she did not believe Christianity had been harmed by the Folsom Street Fair.
What the Street Fair Actually Does
On the ground Folsom is logistics as much as legend. Blocks of Folsom Street close; vendor booths sell leather, rubber, toys, art, and community services; stages run live music and DJs; demo spaces show flogging, rope, and other play to crowds that mix veterans with first-timers. Gate collections and beverage sales bankroll beneficiaries in public health, human services, and the arts. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s gate presence ties the fair to a longer San Francisco tradition of queer camp as fundraising and moral theater. Charity spanking booths make the kink itself the donation mechanism—exhibitionism with a receipt.
The fair’s growth into a top-tier outdoor spectator event means cameras and tourists are part of the ecology. That creates tension leather communities know well: visibility is political power and safer-sex outreach; it is also spectacle that can flatten participants into content. Organizers and longtime attendees navigate that line every September—asserting that public SM on Folsom is community property, not only a free show for the algorithm. Food-court photography books like Rababy’s make the same argument visually: people eat, talk, cruise, and undress in the same daylight frame, ordinary and extreme at once.
Geography of Memory
Understanding Folsom means holding two maps at once. One is the historical Miracle Mile densest in the 1970s—baths, bars, fisting clubs, flagellation rooms, cowboy dress codes, watersports bars, in-bar leather stores. The other is the post-AIDS, post-redevelopment corridor where those rooms largely closed but the street fair and a thinner bar ecology (including The Eagle’s longevity) still claim the neighborhood every Leather Pride Week. The 2017 Leather History Alley on Ringold formalizes that claim in granite, flag stone, and bootprints—Gayle Rubin’s narrative voice beside Arnett’s Tool Box mural and Mike Caffee’s Leather David—so tourists and new players can walk the story even when the Barracks and Catacombs are long gone.
Sister events export the brand without always sharing the board: Folsom Street East in New York (GMSMA, since 1997) is independent; Folsom Europe in Berlin (since 2003) copies the non-profit outdoor model; Toronto’s Folsom Fair North ran 2003–2008 then ended. Pantheon of Leather awards in 2008, 2012, and 2015 recognized Folsom Street Events as a nonprofit institution, not only a party. That institutionalization—boards, beneficiaries, sister fairs, history alleys—is how leather culture survives when real estate and epidemics erase the original rooms.

Alan Selby’s biography The Mayor of Folsom Street (Fair Page Media, 2017) covers early fair days and the gear-shop world that fed them; Selby’s Mr. S Leather lineage ties commerce to community infrastructure. Michael Rababy’s Folsom Street Food Court (Delancey Street Press, 2018) documents the fair’s food-court undress across 2007 and 2017—proof that even as San Francisco gentrifies, Folsom keeps a stubborn authenticity when the rest of SoMa turns condo. Together the books argue that Folsom is not frozen 1984 nostalgia; it is a living annual renegotiation of how much kink the city will still host in daylight.
