Eri Kikuchi: Kyonyu Pioneer and Bondage Photobooks

Kikuchi Eri, written 菊池えり and also 菊池エリ, is a pink-film actress and an early Japanese AV idol of the 1980s. She is widely cited as the first adult-video performer in Japan whose career was built on breasts that were exceptionally large for that time, which is why she is called a founder of the kyonyū boom, 巨乳ブーム. Kimiko Matsuzaka is the one who set that boom fully on fire in 1989, and big-bust titles became a major AV genre in the 1990s. Kikuchi’s earlier work is what the genre was built on. Beyond softcore and hardcore bust films, she appeared in photobooks with explicit BDSM rope bondage, so bondage-model histories still put her name next to the kyonyū brand. She was an adult throughout.

She was born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, on April 5, 1965. Before the official AV debut she did fuzoku work in hotels and soaplands and appeared in several underground pornographic films. In September 1985, at twenty, she debuted for CineMagic in Beautiful D-Cup Girl, Sister L. That launch framed her as a bust-centered star rather than a generic pink-film newcomer.

Pink film, Roman Porno, and Excess

Her pink-film debut was in 1986, for Million Film, in ミス20才 快感!百合子の本番, usually given in English as Miss 20 Year-Old Momoko. In August of the same year she starred for Shintoho Eiga in 菊池エリ 巨乳, Kikuchi Eri Kyonyū, known in English as Eri Kikuchi: Big Tits. She plays Eri, a nude model and AV actress who becomes romantically involved with her manager. In 1988 she headlined one of Nikkatsu’s last Roman Porno films, 菊池エリ 巨乳責め, Kikuchi Eri: Kyonyūzeme, known in English as Eri Kikuchi: Big Tits Blame. In 1993 she made another theatrical big-bust title for Excess Films, Nikkatsu’s softcore line after Roman Porno ended. Those credits put her on both the independent pink circuit and the major-studio softcore pipeline.

Through the late 1980s and early 1990s she published multiple photobooks, many of them explicit BDSM rope-bondage shoots, tying the bust fame to SM visual culture. In 2003 she worked as a lecturer and demonstrator at AV Cultures School, founded by the male AV actor Shinji Kubo to train future AV directors. The Japanese press covered that second act. In December 2004, at thirty-nine, she returned to AV for Madonna, a studio that specializes in mature actresses. In July 2005 she performed in Mourning Dress Slave / Eri Kikuchi for CineMagic, the same company that had launched her twenty years earlier. As of 2013 she was billed at the Nagoya fashion-health shop Nishiki VIP Toshima.
