Cuff Complex, also known as The Cuff, is a gay bar and nightclub in Seattle, Washington, in the United States. Anchored on Capitol Hill, it is widely known as a leather-friendly house with multiple bars, outdoor deck space, and a long record of hosting leather, bear, HIV-positive, and queer community groups. For Pacific Northwest leather and BDSM nightlife, The Cuff is a primary landmark rather than a side note.
Location, founding, and ownership
The complex sits at 1533 13th Avenue in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. It features four bars and a large deck. The crowd is diverse, but the brand is leather. Two men established the bar because they wanted a positive social outlet for people who were into leather, Levi’s and uniforms. Cuff, Ltd. was created in December 1992, and building construction began in January 1993. Randy Fields purchased Cuff in 2004. The bar celebrated its twentieth anniversary in March 2013, two decades of leather-and-Levi’s nightlife on the hill that anchors much of Seattle’s queer map.
Community groups and Pride
Cuff Complex hosts meetings and social gatherings for Northwest Bears, POZ Seattle (a grassroots organization of HIV-positive gay men), Seattle Men in Leather, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf. It also hosts an annual Sunday Pride Street Party. That calendar makes the venue a civic living room for leather titleholders, bears, poz community organizing, camp religious-parody nuns, and Deaf queer social space, not only a cruise bar after midnight.
Pantheon awards and press reputation
In 1995 and 2001, Cuff Complex received the Business of the Year award as part of the Pantheon of Leather Awards, national leather-community recognition for a Seattle house. In 2009, Seattle Weekly said of the bar’s clientele that while gay clubs like Neighbours and R-Place had been infiltrated by heteros in recent years, the Cuff still retained a predominantly gay male crowd. The paper joked that maybe it was the sex shop full of cock rings and flogs, the wall portrait of a lion having sex with a man, or the fact that women were limited to a single unisex bathroom: Whatever the reason, vaginas are few and far between at the Cuff. The quip is dated and crude, but it captures how the bar was read locally, still gay-male and leather-coded when other rooms diluted.
