9½ Weeks (1986) is the American erotic drama that put a studio-scale BDSM-style affair into mainstream cinemas: spanking behind a locked door, a slap that becomes rape, public dares, a stolen necklace, a riding crop in a tack shop, a belt snapped at a woman on her knees. Adrian Lyne directed. Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke star. Basinger plays a SoHo gallery employee who falls into a short, consuming affair with a Wall Street broker who wants control of her clothes, her food, her hair, and her orgasms. Sarah Kernochan, Zalman King, and Patricia Louisianna Knop adapted the 1978 memoir of the same name by Austrian-American writer Ingeborg Day, published under the pseudonym Elizabeth McNeill. The picture was finished in 1984 and sat until February 1986. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the American distributor, found it too explicit and cut it. In the United States it flopped: about $6.7 million against a $17 million budget, mixed reviews. Uncut, overseas—especially Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—it made around $100 million worldwide, sold a soundtrack, and became a rental-and-DVD cult object. For kink viewers it is still the Hollywood film that treated dominance, humiliation, and negotiated collapse as a date-movie subject, even after the studio sanded the edges.
What Happens on Screen
Elizabeth McGraw, who works at a SoHo gallery, meets John Gray, a Wall Street arbitrageur, at a Chinese grocer and again at a street fair, where he buys her an expensive scarf. They start seeing each other. His behavior turns strange fast. He gives her a costly gold watch and tells her to think about him touching her at noon every day. She goes further and masturbates at work on that schedule. She wants him to meet her friends. He will only see her in the evenings and tells her to keep the friends for daylight. Alone in his apartment one night, she finds a photograph of him with another woman, April Tover. When he calls and asks if she went through his things, she admits it. He says he will punish her. When he comes home he orders her to face the wall for a spanking. She tries to leave. The door is locked. He slaps her. She slaps him back. He rapes her. After that she falls in love with him, begins to enjoy the dominance, and has sex with him on top of a clock tower.
John takes over the rest of her life: what she wears, what she eats, how he brushes her hair, how he feeds her. She grows dependent and loses her sense of self. One day she follows him to work with lunch and says she wants to “be one of the guys.” He has her cross-dress for a meeting at a bar in the Algonquin Hotel. After they leave, they are mistaken for a gay couple and attacked by tramps in an alley. Elizabeth stabs one of the attackers in the buttocks and they run. High on the violence, she tells him she loves him, strips, shows wet informal underwear, and they have sex at the crime scene.
He starts making the power exchange visible in public. He dares her to shoplift a necklace; she does. In Bloomingdale’s bedding department he tells her to “spread your legs for daddy” in front of the saleswoman. In an equestrian shop he hits her on the leg with a riding crop and tells the salesman, “I’ll take this one.” That night she does a striptease in his apartment. Later, in his office, he throws money on the floor and tells her to crawl and pick it up. She starts, then refuses. He takes off his belt and whips the floor, almost hitting her. She cries and protests. He keeps demanding the crawl. She finally does it, then throws the money in his face and says she hates the game.
At home with him she is confident and sexual. At work she withdraws and thinks about her ex-husband Bruce, who has started seeing her co-worker and roommate Molly. She goes to the country to visit an elderly artist, Farnsworth, and lock in an exhibit. At the Hotel Chelsea, John has her wear a blindfold. He touches her briefly, then a South American sex worker comes in and caresses Elizabeth while John watches. Elizabeth panics. The woman takes the blindfold off. John takes the woman into the next room and starts undressing her. Elizabeth attacks, then flees; John follows. They end up in an adult venue. During a live sex show Elizabeth kisses the man next to her. John comes to her and they embrace. Her gallery opening of Farnsworth’s work is a success. Farnsworth, uncomfortable among the party, finds her in tears in a corner. Dependent on John for emotional balance, she calls him wearing a metal bracelet cuff. The next morning she tries to leave his apartment. He tries to keep her by confessing his feelings. She leaves anyway. He starts a mental countdown, sure she will come back before he finishes. She walks away into the street crowd, crying.
How a Studio SM Film Got Made
Lyne wanted to adapt Ingeborg Day’s Nine and a Half Weeks after reading it, and at first thought a studio picture about sadomasochism was impossible. He directed Flashdance (1983) specifically to prove he could get that film greenlit. TriStar Pictures came on board, then pulled out just before principal photography over “creative differences.” Lyne later said the pressure came from principal stakeholder The Coca-Cola Company over the content. Shooting went ahead with money from the Producers Sales Organization. After the film was finished, MGM/UA Entertainment Co. agreed to distribute it in North America. The production story is the kink-history point: Hollywood would not finance a spanking-and-crawl movie until the director had a pop hit to spend as proof.
Basinger called the audition grueling. She was asked to play the scene in which her character crawls like a prostitute groveling for money in the man’s sexual game. She left crying and humiliated, told her agent she never wanted to hear about the film again, and said she would refuse the part even if they offered it. At home she found two dozen roses and a card from Lyne and Rourke. Lyne kept after her until she changed her mind. He refused to run rehearsals for the two leads so that the first time the characters met on screen would be the first time the actors met in the work. That is not a romantic anecdote. It is a director using real unease as fuel for a dominance story.
They shot in New York from 30 April to 10 August 1984 on a $15 million budget, then slipped two weeks and another $500,000 because Basinger, Rourke, and Lyne fought constantly. Rourke said the tension helped: it made the on-screen conflict more convincing, and he claimed Lyne encouraged it. Lyne used monochromatic film, smoke machines, and grey sets and costumes to imitate black-and-white. He picked locations he could light with daylight: Trinity Church, the Canal Street Flea Market, the Algonquin Hotel, the Café des Artistes, Coney Island, Wall Street, Little Italy, SoHo, Bloomingdale’s, Comme des Garçons, the Chelsea Hotel. He tried to film at the New York Stock Exchange and was refused because of the film’s content. After bad U.S. test screenings and an X rating from the MPAA, MGM cut three minutes from the North American theatrical version. The cuts were meant to make Elizabeth more sympathetic, to underline her consent, and to buy an R rating. The scene in which John snaps his belt and forces her to crawl for cash made about two-thirds of a test audience walk out. That scene stayed intact in foreign markets and later on home video. The American theatrical print is the SM film with the SM taken down so a mall audience would stay in the seats.
Score, Novel, and What the Studio Softened
Stewart Copeland was first hired to score the film. Geffen Records called the script “offensive” and his involvement ended. The main single from 9½ Weeks: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was “I Do What I Do,” John Taylor of Duran Duran’s first solo vocal during a band hiatus. It reached No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 42 on the UK Singles Chart. Taylor and Jonathan Elias wrote music for the score. Jack Nitzsche also wrote original music that is not on the album. The soundtrack did include Luba, Bryan Ferry, Dalbello, Corey Hart, Joe Cocker’s “You Can Leave Your Hat On,” Devo, Eurythmics, and Stewart Copeland. Winston Grennan’s reggae “Savior” and Jean Michel Jarre’s “Arpegiateur,” used on the stairway sex scene in the rain, were left off the record. The album sold; the U.S. cut of the movie did not.
The film is a real departure from the memoir’s darker line. In the book, John commits crimes and forces Elizabeth into a violent mugging in an elevator. The novel ends in a quasi-rape that leaves an increasingly compliant Elizabeth in mental anguish; he takes her to a psychiatric hospital and never comes back. The movie ends somber and implies her anguish, especially in the last stretch, but it never stages the hospital abandonment. Hollywood kept the crop, the belt, the crawl, and the locked door. It would not keep the psychiatric dump.
Bomb at Home, Cult Everywhere Else
North America was a failure, about $3 million in the United States against the larger reported domestic take of $6.7 million on $17 million. Internationally it did better, about $17.6 million in one accounting and far more once the long foreign runs are counted, toward the $100 million worldwide figure. At the time, major films were supposed to make their money in America first. This one inverted the map. The Producers Sales Organization blamed MGM for refusing to market a film it found embarrassing. In 1998 MGM Home Entertainment issued an “uncut, uncensored” 117-minute DVD. Warner Home Video put it on U.S. Blu-ray on 6 March 2012. The version kink viewers actually watch is the one that still has the belt and the crawl.
Rotten Tomatoes later sat at 60% from 25 reviews, with a consensus that the sex titillates while the drama between the sheets is standard for the genre. CinemaScore audiences gave it a C−. Roger Ebert was a champion: three and a half stars out of four, arguing that Rourke and Basinger make the people and the relationship convincing, more human than the usual erotic-film mannequins. The rental market warmed later viewers. Europe, especially Italy and France, and Latin America took it seriously. In France it ran five years in a Paris cinema and is part of that roughly $100 million story. In São Paulo it played thirty months, 1986 to 1989, at the cult house Cine Belas Artes. The 1986 Golden Raspberry Awards nominated it for Worst Actress (Basinger), Worst Original Song (“I Do What I Do,” Elias, Taylor, Michael Des Barres), and Worst Screenplay (Knop, King, Kernochan). All three lost. Home video made both leads into stars anyway.
The afterlife is mostly pop citation and cheaper sequels. Soda Stereo’s 1986 song “Persiana Americana,” Akina Nakamori’s 1986 album Cross My Palm, and Sunmi’s 2018 “Heroine” all took the film as inspiration. Joaquín Sabina name-checks it in “Y si amanece por fin” on Mentiras Piadosas (1990). George Costanza mentions it in the Seinfeld episode “The Blood.” Sheena Easton’s video for “Days Like This” restages several scenes. In 1997 a direct-to-video sequel, Love in Paris, paired Rourke with Angie Everhart under Anne Goursaud. In 1998 a straight-to-video prequel, The First 9½ Weeks, starred Paul Mercurio and Clara Bellar. The 1991 parody 9½ Ninjas! treated the original as already famous enough to mock. Joe Bob Briggs filed the film in Profoundly Erotic: Sexy Movies that Changed History (Rizzoli, 2005). None of that is the reason the page belongs on a BDSM site. The reason is the 1986 feature itself: a studio director who used Flashdance as a ticket to film spanking, a locked door, rape after a slap, a necklace theft, a riding crop, a belt, and a crawl for cash—and a distributor that cut the crawl so America would buy a ticket.
