Venus in Furs (Italian: Venere in pelliccia), also known as Devil in the Flesh, is a 1969 Italian erotic drama directed by Massimo Dallamano and drawn from Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s novel of male masochism and female dominance. It first reached audiences in Germany in 1969 as Venus im Pelz. For BDSM film history the title is as famous for its censorship odyssey as for its fur-and-submission premise: Italy’s censors, cuts, confiscations, and a later giallo rewrite turned one literary SM adaptation into a multi-title battle over what could be shown.
Censorship, Cuts, and Changing Titles
In Italy the film failed the censorship examination because sex scenes were judged too rough. Attempts to satisfy the board with various cut versions failed. It was eventually released in 1973 as Venere nuda, only to be confiscated after a few days for contempt of decency. In 1975 it finally reached Italian cinemas as Le malizie di Venere, in a heavily censored form re-edited and padded with new scenes shot by Paolo Heusch that bent the plot toward giallo. The new title deliberately echoed Laura Antonelli’s box-office heat from Malizia (1973). Literary masochism thus survived in Italy only after costume changes—literal and generic—that diluted the original erotic argument for local release politics.
Synopsis
Following Sacher-Masoch’s infamous novel, the film tracks a young couple’s perverted passions as Severin watches beautiful Wanda writhe naked among furs. Voyeurism triggers a whirlpool of emotion rooted in a childhood episode that punished looking with pain. Peeping becomes the hinge between memory, desire, and submission—classic masochistic circuit where watching is already a form of being caught and punished. The fur-and-body tableau is not decoration; it is the engine that reactivates trauma as erotic script.
