In 1956 Catherine Robbe-Grillet published the novel The Image, French title L’Image, under the name Jean de Berg with Éditions de Minuit. A male pseudonym was a common move then for explicit SM fiction. Éditions de Minuit was a house for serious French literary modernism, not a gutter-erotica imprint. That literary imprint is why The Image became one of the mid-century French SM texts critics treated as literature rather than disposable porn. The book’s later life stays tied to her own name, Robbe-Grillet, and to the 1975 film The Image, also known as The Punishment of Anne. Literature plus erotic cinema is why it still sits on both high-art erotica lists and kink shelves.
The novel turns on a triangle: a male narrator and two women, Anne and Claire. Their behavior keeps confusing him until the last chapter locks the clues in place. Anne is revealed as the mirror image of Claire, the woman he actually loves. The “image” in the title is the structure, not decoration. Dominance, submission, and staged punishment work as a system of reflections: who is watching, who is being shaped, and whose desire is actually being served.
