Pandora’s Box: Mistress Raven’s Chelsea Pro-Domme House

Pandora’s Box is a professional-domination BDSM studio in a large basement in Chelsea, Manhattan. Mistress Raven founded it and ran it for more than a decade. In those years she was one of the best-known dominatrixes in the United States. The house became a commercial femdom landmark: adult clients bought structured fetish, roleplay, and power-exchange sessions. Like many New York pro-domme houses, it does not allow sex on the premises. Paid time stays separated from full-service escorting and is framed as ruled power theater.

Nick Broomfield’s documentary Fetishes did a lot of the work of making the studio known outside New York. The film follows sessions as they were actually worked, rather than tabloid shock. Photographic journalist Susan Meiselas covered the house in a book and in many magazine and newspaper pieces. In 2018 she came back for Garage magazine and photographed the dungeon again for a feature that put BDSM next to high fashion, with the mistresses then working there. Documentary attention and the fashion return both treated a working Chelsea basement as a cultural subject, rather than leaving it as underground rumor. In 2006 Pandora’s Box took in another domination studio, Den of Iniquity. The session list stayed wide: fetish and roleplay among the rest of the BDSM work on offer.
