Outline of BDSM: Practices, Roles, Gear, and the Words People Use

BDSM is not one label. It is a spread of erotic practices built around dominance and submission, roleplay, restraint, and the relationships that come with them. The menu is wide enough that many people do some of these things and never claim a BDSM identity. Belonging to the community usually depends on self-identification and shared experience. Interest can be one experiment or a whole way of living. Consent, negotiation, and local law sit outside every item. The people involved are adults who have agreed.

The acronym is stitched from older ones. B&D is bondage and discipline. D&S is dominance and submission, including master/slave roleplay and power that continues past a single scene. S&M is sadism and masochism. Those three are the frame the subculture uses to explain itself.

Bondage, and how gear gets named

Bondage is often sorted by material or by body. Materials include Japanese rope, metal, and handcuffs. Body categories include self-bondage, the head, the neck and collars, stocks, the arms, the wrists, breast bondage, and crotch rope. The categories shape both the toy bag and the way classes are organized. A list like this names forms. It does not teach ties.

Gear language gets narrow fast. Gags alone include ball, bit, funnel, Jennings, muzzle, OTM, pecker, penis, stuff, tape, and Whitehead. Harnesses for bondage sit beside harnesses made for a cock, a dildo, or the head.

Roles, psychology, and sensation

Common D/s and discipline themes include ageplay, fear play, body worship, boot worship, erotic humiliation, erotic hypnosis, erotic sexual denial, facesitting, female dominance, female submission, male dominance, male submission, bladder desperation, feminization, master/slave dynamics, medical fetishism, rape fantasy, and service-oriented submission. Ageplay here means adults acting. Rape fantasy is a community name for negotiated adult roleplay. It is not a script for a crime. The vocabulary describes what people call things. It is not a prescription for every relationship.

Sensation and SM labels often sit together: enema play, erotic spanking, speculum play, breast torture, nipple clamps and nipple piercing, cock and ball torture, pussy torture, tickle torture. Intensity and medical risk vary widely. A label does not tell you the skill or the safety of the person using it.

Edge play and the risk

Edge play means practices with raised risk, often discussed under RACK, Risk-Aware Consensual Kink. The cluster includes knife play and fear play (blades, the look of threat, a psychological charge), body modification (play piercing, suspension, and related ordeal work), sexual roleplay (age, animal, gender, and rape play), and sensation play (temperature, breath, impact, pain, sensory deprivation).

Suspension and breath play are high-risk. They need a clear negotiation and a real ability to stop. Knife play, piercing, and suspension are names on a map here, not instructions.

Scene words, names, and what is not the same thing

Everyday scene vocabulary includes bondage, discipline, top and bottom, dominant and submissive, master and slave, maledom, dominatrix, sexual slavery as a role metaphor rather than literal slavery, hard limits, negotiation, contracts, play, scene, and session. The same English word does not mean the same thing in a vanilla sentence and in a dungeon, which is why glossaries still matter for newcomers.

Names that keep coming up, from historical writers and image-makers to later educators and producers, include Sade, Sacher-Masoch, Krafft-Ebing, Kinsey, Irving Klaw, Bettie Page, Jay Wiseman, Janet Hardy, Laura Antoniou, Peter Acworth, and Jeff Gord. Media markers include Story of O, Venus in Furs, Secretary, Belle de Jour, Fifty Shades of Grey, The Ethical Slut, fetish documentaries, and a long run of films and series that borrow a D/s look.

An outline is for orientation. It shows where rope sits relative to D/s protocol, where edge play sits relative to a light spanking, and which names and films the subculture repeats when it explains itself. Fetish dress and fetish interests overlap BDSM without being the same list: leather, latex and PVC, spandex, stockings, feet, fur, diapers, breasts, and the rest. A clinical label such as sexual sadism disorder is not the same thing as consensual adult SM.
