The Mineshaft was a members-only BDSM leather bar and sex club for gay men at 835 Washington Street, at Little West 12th Street, in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, on the edge of the West Village and Greenwich Village. It operated from 8 October 1976 until the New York City Department of Health closed it on 7 November 1985, with tax problems also weighing heavily in the shutdown. For leather history it remains a mythic space: a grimy, signless upstairs club that defined an era of public sex, fist-fucking culture, and strict dress-code masculinity before AIDS-era regulation and legal pressure shut the door.
Patrons, Myth, and Access
The Mineshaft drew a wide range of patrons, some famous. Author Jack Fritscher was present on opening night and attended hundreds of times. His lover, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, shot extensively there, served at one point as official photographer, and once said, “After dinner I go to the Mineshaft.” Gay erotic artist Rex created images and posters for the club; Annie Sprinkle has claimed she was one of only three women ever admitted. Other visitors said to have passed through include Freddie Mercury, Vincente Minnelli, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Rock Hudson, Michel Foucault, and Camille O’Grady. Manager Wally Wallace (born James Wallace) said he once refused Mick Jagger; a bouncer turned away Rudolf Nureyev. There was no sign on the entrance. The exterior was often described as “grimy.” The site had previously housed the gay bar Zodiac. Entry was up a flight of stairs to the second floor; door staff rejected preppie clothes and cologne—a widely known rule that helped make the bar’s style influential far beyond its membership list.
Layout and Sexual Architecture
Originally the club occupied only the second floor; it soon expanded into the first floor below, reached by rear stairs. The upper floor functioned as a bar area, though no alcohol was sold for legal reasons, and it had a roof deck. Nudity or minimal clothing was encouraged, with a clothes check provided. Spaces were purpose-built for sex: a jail-cell room, a truck-back area, dungeons, slings, cans of Crisco (then a common lubricant among gay men before modern commercial lube), spotlighted bathtubs for watersports, a wall of glory holes, and briefly a scat room abandoned as too extreme even for that house. Fisting was commonplace; according to the Mineshaft Newsletter, the Fist Fuckers of America held meetings there. Recreational drug use was also common. Promiscuity was not a side effect—it was the point of the architecture.
Dress Code
A posted dress code, adopted 1 October 1976 and restated for 1978, spelled out what the board of directors approved: cycle leather and Western gear, Levi’s, jocks, action-ready wear, uniforms, T-shirts, plaid and plain shirts, club overlays, patches, and sweat. Explicitly banned were colognes or perfumes; suits, ties, and dress pants; rugby shirts, designer sweaters, or tuxedos; disco drag or dresses; and heavy outerwear in the “playground.” The note explained that the code was designed for the particular men who formed the club’s core. That document is still quoted as a classic of leather-bar style policing: working gear and sexual readiness in, middle-class fragrance and formal wear out.
Closing, Legal Aftermath, and Archive
After the 1985 closure, six men associated with both the Mineshaft and an affiliated heterosexual club, the Hellfire, faced criminal charges. Four pleaded guilty; former New York City police officer Richard Bell was convicted; a sixth fled the country. Wally Wallace later donated the club’s full records—including artwork by Rex and Al Shapiro—to the Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago, preserving administrative paper and visual culture that would otherwise have vanished with the building’s myth.
Popular Culture
William Friedkin’s film Cruising, starring Al Pacino, was meant to evoke Mineshaft-style gay cruising even though the bar is not named on screen. Because the Mineshaft refused filming, production used the Hellfire Club dressed to resemble it; regulars appeared as extras, and street scenes were shot nearby. Pacino attended the real club while researching the role. (A bar called the Mineshaft does not appear in Gerald Walker’s 1970 novel Cruising, the loose source for the 1980 film.) Jack Fritscher has argued that Jacques Morali drew the four Village People archetypes from the Mineshaft’s dress code; Glenn Hughes, the original leather biker of the Village People, frequented the club. Freddie Mercury wears a Mineshaft T-shirt in the official video for Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and Brooks Ashmanskas’ character Stanley wears one in episode 5 of the Netflix series Uncoupled.
