Junko Mabuki: Nikkatsu’s Short-Reign SM Queen

Junko Mabuki (麻吹淳子) is a compact name in pink-film history. Born Sumiko Kono (河野寿美子), she first appeared as Jun Sakaki in Eiichi Kudo’s Aftermath of Battles Without Honor and Humanity, and had debuted by 1979 at the latest. When Naomi Tani retired abruptly in 1979, Nikkatsu needed someone in the SM-queen slot she left. Mabuki was the star they pushed. For viewers who know kinbaku cinema and Japanese SM history, she is the bridge out of Tani’s mythic period and a short, intense chapter of the early-1980s rope cycle built on office ladies, nurses, and teachers. The films still circulate among Japanese SM collectors.

Oniroku Dan’s approval, and a body that could not stay

SM novelist and screenwriter Oniroku Dan decided a lot of her career. He approved of her and wrote her first lead, White Uniform in Rope Hell (団鬼六 白衣縄地獄, 1980), directed by Shōgorō Nishimura. By his own account he praised the energy on screen and also her sex life off it. Nikkatsu packaged her as the new SM Queen and tried to recover the Tani years. Rope and torment roles outran her endurance. She left acting after about two years, a shorter reign than the queens who came later. The shortness is part of the legend. She is not a long monopoly on the brand. She is the burst of nurse, secretary, and teacher rope films in the early 1980s.

The succession, and the job titles in the rope

Dan’s pieces, first published in Japanese in 1997, came out in English in 2010 from Vertical, Inc. as Season of Infidelity. The closing piece, “Bewitching Bloom,” recounts his relationship with Naomi Tani and names three later Nikkatsu SM queens: Mabuki, Izumi Shima, and Miki Takakura. That essay locks her into the studio’s succession story. English-language readers who never opened a Japanese video catalog often meet her there first. The 1979–1981 list is short and dense. The directors are Roman Porno regulars: Shōgorō Nishimura, Katsuhiko Fujii, Hidehiro Ito, Atsushi Fujiura, and Mamoru Watanabe. The titles are Onsen Pleasures (快楽昇天風呂), Showa Erotica: Noble Lady of Roses (昭和エロチカ 薔薇の貴婦人), Nympho Diver: Tingling (若後家海女 うずく), White Uniform in Rope Hell (団鬼六 白衣縄地獄), Blazing Bondage Lady / Madam Rope Flame (団鬼六 縄炎夫人), Hell of Roses (団鬼六 薔薇地獄), Office Lady Rope Slave (団鬼六 OL縄奴隷), Secretary Rope Discipline (団鬼六 女秘書縄調教), Zoom Up: Woman From the Dirty Magazine (ズームアップ ビニール本の女), Lustful Life: “Nights Make Me Wet!” (愛欲生活 夜よ、濡らして), Lecherous Flower Train (好色花でんしゃ), Female Teacher in Rope Hell (団鬼六 女教師縄地獄), and Female Beautician Rope Discipline (団鬼六 女美容師縄飼育). Nurses, OLs, secretaries, teachers, and beauticians are not random costumes. They are the professional types this genre liked to tie, discipline, and display.

A short syllabus

For international kink viewers who find Nikkatsu Roman Porno through boutique Blu-rays and scanlation, Mabuki is a compact syllabus. Watch the 1980–81 leads that carry Dan’s name and you see how the studio sold kinbaku-adjacent softcore to theatrical Japan: a star in the clothes of care work and office work, directors who knew the formula, and a woman who could not carry the rope forever. Later queens stretched the brand. Mabuki is the early-eighties slice, when rope-hell, rose-hell, and office-lady slavery titles stacked up almost month by month. The performers and the audience are adults.
