Gor: John Norman’s Counter-Earth Novels & Gorean M/s Subculture

Gor is the fictional Counter-Earth setting of the long sword-and-planet novel series written by philosophy professor John Lange under the pen name John Norman, beginning with Tarnsman of Gor (1966). Inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Barsoom and related pulp, the books mix planetary adventure with erotica and a sexual philosophy that repeatedly shows men abducting and physically and sexually brutalizing women who then “grow to enjoy” submission. Known geography centers on a continent’s western seaboard from Arctic toward south of the equator, Thassa ocean west, Voltai mountains east, islands and sparse eastern plains. “Gor” means “home stone” in the northern civilized cities’ language—also a regional lingua franca. City-state politics (especially Ar vs Cos over the Vosk) echo Rome-vs-sea-power patterns; higher conflict pits Priest-Kings against the predatory alien Kurii for control of Gor and Earth via human agents.

Plotlines and Narrators

Most volumes are action-sexual adventures with battles borrowed from Greek trireme war and medieval siege. Publishers have branded the run under many umbrella names (Chronicles of Counter-Earth, Saga of Tarl Cabot, Gorean Cycle/Chronicles/Saga, Counter-Earth Saga for non-Cabot leads). DAW published volumes 8–25 then stopped, citing low sales; Norman in a 1996 statement blamed feminist blacklisting across a small cluster of SF paperback houses, pointing to continued foreign sales and strong sell-through on his later Telnarian series before a hostile editor killed that line. Norman’s academic background in philosophy surfaces as lengthy in-world justifications of hierarchy, nature, and “order”—passages critics skim as sermons and some Gorean lifestylers treat as scripture.

Compared with negotiated Master/slave relationships in contemporary BDSM communities, Gorean fiction typically erases ongoing consent, community accountability, and the right to revoke. Enslavement is often non-consensual abduction followed by eroticized breaking.
