Two lines of female slaves, chained to the bilge of a galley, row under the whip until they drop from exhaustion. Panic fills their eyes as they struggle to match the relentless drum. Twenty-hour shifts end only in feeding or punishment at the overseers' whim. The galley is a microcosm of horror — especially the punishment bench — and fear of the plank, the mast and the captain's cabin hangs over every stroke, turning the slave ship into an orgy of violence and enforced sex.
