Erotic Spanking: From a Smack to Formal Caning

Erotic spanking is spanking someone for the sexual arousal of one or both partners. Intensity and length vary; hands or implements both count. It can be a spontaneous smack on bare buttocks during sex or full roleplay—ageplay meaning adults acting age roles, domestic discipline fantasy, and the like. It often sits inside BDSM but is not exclusive to it. The person receiving is commonly called the spankee.

History runs long. The Etruscan Tomb of the Whipping (fifth century BC) shows erotic flagellation; early sex manuals such as the Kama Sutra, the Koka Shastra, and The Perfumed Garden recommend spanking to heighten arousal. In the nineteenth century interest in giving, receiving, and watching spanking rose in France and Britain, in limited-edition novels and early spanking photography. Early twentieth century is often called a golden age: cheaper larger print runs, heavy illustration, output climbing through the 1920s and peaking in the 1930s, with French publishers, writers, and illustrators prominent, and studios such as Biederer and Ostra on the photo side. German occupation of France and censorship cut that run; John Willie’s Bizarre (about 1946–1959) is a noted exception. From the mid-1960s, paperbacks and looser censorship brought English and German translations and reprints of older French and British work.

Late twentieth century made fetish magazines and spanking film easier to get; VCRs let consumers watch at home (recordings existed from the 1920s, but quality and circulation were limited). In the twenty-first century blogs, non-profit story sites, and mostly American or British porn sites shoot spanking scenes across many scenarios.

Implements, Feel, and Safety

The palm is basic. Purpose-built tools include cane, paddle, strap, tawse, and martinet. Improvised kit covers slipper, wooden spoon, hairbrush, carpet beater, riding crop, switch, and birch; feather-duster handles are common in China, plus fly swatters and nettles. Feel splits roughly into stingy (cane-like, sharp on the skin) and thuddy (paddle-like, deeper). Heavier usually means more thud.

Some people only like giving, some only receiving, some both. In a survey of 152 people who said they practiced sadomasochism, about 22% traced interest to extrinsic sources (parental discipline, introduction in adulthood); about 78% called it intrinsic, often from childhood or adolescence before it was sexualized, and most could not explain the origin. About a third cited enjoying “good” pain versus “bad” pain; power exchange with a trusted partner came up often. Journalist Jillian Keenan has argued spanking fetishism can be treated as a form of sexual orientation rather than mental illness.
