The Denver Eagle: Leather, Bears, and a Bar That Kept Moving

The Denver Eagle is a gay bar in Denver, Colorado, and a landmark for the local leather and bear scenes. It has no shared corporate ownership with the other Eagle bars around the United States. It stands on its own by sticking to those crowds. The run has been rough: a famous original room, a developer closing, a short reboot that failed, and a later reopening under Black owners.

The early Denver Eagle sat at 1475 36th Street in the RiNo arts district. The old room was known for huge gold door handles shaped like penises. The joke was architectural, and it also announced, without embarrassment, that this was a leather bar. In April 2016 a developer bought the property, the Eagle lost the lease, and the bar closed. Queer rooms on the industrial edge of a gentrifying city were disappearing that way often enough that nobody treated it as a one-off.

The next years were unstable. In March 2018 a new room opened at 1246 E. 31st Avenue and shut again after a few months. In 2022 new owners bought the building at 5110 W Colfax Avenue, formerly The Den, a gay bar that had already gone dark. The grand opening ran from March 19 to March 22 under the theme “The Eagle Has Landed.” The Denver Eagle is one of the relatively few Black-owned gay bars in the United States. In a leather-bar world that has not been racially open, that fact carries weight.

The bar has its own kitchen and serves food at themed events, so people eat there and stay. It is not a late-night cruise room with nothing else on offer. In 2007 Best of Denver gave the original the title Best Leather Bar That Should Be Featured in Architectural Digest. The praise was for the design swagger, including those door handles. Leather and BDSM travelers heading to Denver should remember how many times the place has died and come back. The address and the owners have changed. The West Colfax room still means leather, bears, and a house that pours drinks and cooks.
