Body of Evidence is a 1993 erotic thriller directed by Uli Edel, written by Brad Mirman, and produced by Dino De Laurentiis. Madonna and Willem Dafoe star; Joe Mantegna, Anne Archer, Julianne Moore, and Jürgen Prochnow fill supporting roles. It has a durable reputation as a Madonna vanity project, mocked for plot holes and dialogue that does not sound like human speech, and it was her fourth film to get almost universally mauled after Shanghai Surprise (1986), Who’s That Girl (1987), and Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989). France and Japan released it as Body. In Japan, Madonna’s other 1993 film Dangerous Game was retitled Body II even though the two pictures share no story. Plot: heart-attack sex, an $8 million will, and a lawyer on a leash
Wealthy Portland man Andrew Marsh dies after an erotic session involving bondage and homemade porn. The prime suspect is his lover Rebecca Carlson. She tells lawyer Frank Dulaney she is innocent; he takes the case believing her. District Attorney Robert Garrett argues Rebecca deliberately worked Marsh into a fatal heart attack with aggressive sex so she could collect the $8 million he left her. She claims she did not even know she was in the will.
Once the trial starts, Rebecca and Frank begin a sadomasochistic affair behind the back of Frank’s wife Sharon. He is obviously hungry for her; she baits and withdraws. In their first encounter she dominates him by binding his elbows together behind his back with his own belt. Held like that, he gets hot wax poured on his naked body before she will let him come. That sequence is the film’s most cited SM beat: belt bondage plus wax as courtroom-adjacent topping, not a dungeon with negotiation. Frank is the married defense lawyer who thinks he is in charge of a case and discovers he is the one being topped; Rebecca is written as a sexual predator in heels, not as a dominant with a safeword. The movie never bothers with consent language. The kink is evidence, bait, and murder method.
Marsh’s doctor, Alan Paley, testifies in a way that points at Rebecca. Frank undercuts him with an answering-machine message that makes Paley look like a man trying to blackmail Rebecca into sex, wrecking him as a witness. Pleased, Rebecca puts her hand down Frank’s underwear in a crowded elevator and enjoys watching him try to look blank. Despite his fear of being seen, he agrees when she insists they have public sex in the courthouse parking garage.
An ex-lover, Jeffrey Roston, takes the stand and says he also had a heart condition, also changed his will to favor Rebecca, and that she was sexually overbearing and pushed him into sex with no regard for his health. He describes a humiliation almost identical to what Frank has already lived through. Frank’s composure cracks. He drags Rebecca into a side room and ends the affair; she ends it right back. Sharon then confronts Frank, saying she pieced the affair together from a phone call from Rebecca and from the intimate burn marks Rebecca’s "game" left on his body.
Frank goes to Rebecca’s house and accuses her of tipping off his wife. She teases him about what she might have said and he shoves her to the floor. She taunts him again about how far she has already pushed him, opens her robe, and masturbates in front of him, certain that rage will not stop him. When she produces handcuffs and tries to lock him down so she can top him again, he finally reads the pattern, wrestles the cuffs away, and cuffs her wrists to a bedpost—turning the power around for the first time.
Home-video of Marsh shows he had also been sleeping with his secretary Joanne Braslow, a key witness against Rebecca. He had once left Joanne more money, then changed the will after Rebecca. Joanne says she was hurt but loved him and would never have harmed him. Circumstantial evidence still suggests she may have been involved in Marsh unknowingly taking a fatal dose of cocaine. Rebecca tells Frank that Joanne is framing her and that she must testify. Frank, now doubting her innocence and worried her narcissism will sink the defense, eventually gives in. On the stand Rebecca surprises the room with testimony that Roston had an affair with another man. The jury acquits her. On the way out she mockingly thanks Frank and whispers that she is, in fact, guilty of the crime she just walked away from.
Frank still cannot stay away. At her house he overhears an incriminating talk between Rebecca and Paley. He confronts them and realizes Paley is also under her sexual control and had perjured himself to make her look clean. Rebecca is amused that Frank has finally seen the puppet strings. Paley is shocked to learn she was also sleeping with the lawyer. She ridicules both men, openly admitting she used sex to run them and Marsh, and that this is how she got away with murder. Her contempt, and her teasing Paley about the legal hole she has dropped him in, sends him over. After a struggle involving Rebecca and Frank, Paley shoots her with a gun she had grabbed to defend herself. She goes out a window and dies. Paley is arrested for murder. Before Frank leaves with Sharon to try to repair the marriage, he tells Garrett he should have won the case. Garrett answers: "I did."
Portland shoot, box office, NC-17 cut, and the critical pile-on
The picture was shot in Portland, Oregon, with Pittock Mansion as a main location. The opening cemetery scene was filmed at Lone Fir Cemetery. Julianne Moore has called her nude scene "just awful": she was too young to know better, it was the first time she had been asked to get naked, and it turned out to be completely extraneous and gratuitous.
Theatrically the film flopped. Week two dropped about 60%. It took $13 million in the United States and Canada and $25 million overseas, $38 million worldwide. The MPAA originally branded it with the rare NC-17. The first theatrical cut was trimmed from 101 minutes to 99 to buy an R. The video premiere put the deleted sex back. That ratings fight is part of why kink audiences still mention the title: not because the SM is sophisticated, but because wax, belt bondage, and parking-garage sex were enough to push a Madonna vehicle into NC-17 territory in 1993.
Critics demolished it. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 8% from 38 reviews, average 3.10/10, with the consensus that the sex may be kinky but a ludicrous concept is finished off by ridiculous dialogue. Metacritic scores it 29 out of 100 from 17 critics—"generally unfavorable." CinemaScore audiences gave it a C. The film landed on Roger Ebert’s 2005 list of most hated movies; screenplay and performances took special abuse. Gene Siskel called it a "stupid and empty thriller" worse than Madonna’s softcore coffee-table book Sex. Moore later said acting in it was "a big mistake."
