Babydoll Lingerie: Short Nightgown, Cleavage, and Bedroom Fetish Wear

A babydoll is a short, sleeveless, loose-fitting nightgown or negligee, sold as nightwear and, in the cuts that matter on a fetish rail, as bedroom display. The usual construction is a formed-cup bralette for cleavage with an attached, loose skirt that stops somewhere between the navel and the upper thigh. Trim is part of the garment, not an afterthought: lace, ruffles, appliqués, marabou, bows, ribbons, and, often, spaghetti straps. Sheer or translucent cloth is common — nylon, chiffon, silk — so the body under the skirt is the point. The super-short nightgown is credited to the American lingerie designer Sylvia Pedlar, who produced the cut in 1942 because World War II had made fabric a rationed material. A shorter gown used less cloth. The trade started calling the result “babydolls.” Pedlar disliked the name and would not use it. The object is hers. The cutesy label is not.

In 1957 and 1958 the Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga showed his own babydolls. He picked the silhouette because it already tended to hide the waist; exaggerating that hide-the-waistline was exactly the proportion game he wanted to play. A short, unbelted fall of fabric let him blur the middle of the body on a couture floor, the same way a bedroom babydoll blurs it on purpose for a different audience.

The name that Pedlar refused became inescapable after the 1956 film Baby Doll, with Carroll Baker in the title role as a nineteen-year-old nymphet. That is when the style locked in as adult wear rather than as a wartime hemline trick. From the 1950s through the 1960s, babydoll pajamas meant a top plus a loose short bloomer bottom with an elasticized waist and legs. In the 1970s through the 1990s the bloomer gave way to closer-fitting briefs, still with elastic at waist and legs. The most recent pajama versions drop the leg elastic; the bottoms are shorts or tap pants. The nightgown-alone version — bralette, short skirt, no matching bloomer — is the one fetish catalogs mean when they say babydoll without saying “pjs.”

Kinderwhore, then the adult lingerie department

In the early-to-mid 1990s the babydoll became a visible piece of the “kinderwhore” look, carried by Riot Grrrl and grunge performers such as Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland. Torn tights, smeared lipstick, and a short sheer nightgown on a stage is how a lot of people first saw the silhouette as something other than cute.

The contemporary garment is treated as eroticized adult apparel and filed as lingerie. They fully expose the woman’s legs, and some styles emphasize or deliberately expose the breasts as well. The gown is often sold as a set with matching panties, because a typical babydoll is short enough that underwear is visible if you wear any. Styles of the same general length that are not trying to be sexy get called shortie nightgowns, a useful shop distinction: same hem, less charge. The range is now wide enough that many lingerie retailers run babydolls as their own department. Modern cuts wander a long way from the 1960s and 1970s shapes. Pieces from the 1950s to the early 1980s are collectible vintage. Some babydolls open down the front and read as a robe or peignoir rather than as a pull-on gown.

Dresses, bedjackets, bridal, and the short hem

Short daywear dresses of a similar style get called babydoll dresses. The name is sometimes two words, baby doll, and sometimes hyphenated, baby-doll. Some of those day cuts sit close to what infants wear, and to dolls designed like infants; the gown or top is short enough that a diaper can be changed without a full undress. An alternative origin story for the adult nightgown points at the lace-trimmed shortie bedjackets and bed-capes of the 1930s and 1940s, which already had the short hem and the trim vocabulary before Pedlar’s rationing cut. Either genealogy ends in the same place: a brief, decorated top that does not reach the knee.

In the twenty-first century babydolls have become a bridal-lingerie staple. They cost less than a bridal corset and they come in more designs and colours, which is why a honeymoon drawer often holds a white or ivory babydoll instead of a boned white torso. The silhouette also sits next to the chemise and the miniskirt: one is a longer slip, one is a day hem, and the babydoll is the bedroom version that keeps the cups and throws away the extra fabric. Two reference books that treat the garment as part of lingerie history rather than as a joke name are Muriel Barbier and Shazia Boucher’s The Story of Lingerie (Parkstone, 2003) and Caroline Cox’s Lingerie: A Lexicon of Style (Scriptum, 2000). Pedlar still would not have liked the word. The shops kept it anyway: babydoll is the search term.
