Human Furniture and Forniphilia: When a Body Becomes a Chair or Table

Human furniture is furniture in which a person’s body is used as a tray, footstool, chair, table, cabinet, or other item. Sometimes a sculpture of a human body stands in instead. The form shows up in modern art. Forniphilia is the related paraphilia, including what appears in fetish photography and bondage pornography.

In art, models used as human furniture may be nude or semi-nude to heighten erotic or aesthetic charge. A classic example is British pop artist Allen Jones’s 1969 set of three sculptures Hatstand, Table and Chair — semi-naked white women cast as furniture. When those works were auctioned at Sotheby’s in 2012 they drew a feminist protest. Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard later made a sculpture called Chair with the same shape as Jones’s chair but depicting a Black woman. In 2014 collector Dasha Zhukova, partner of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, caused controversy by appearing in a photograph sitting on Melgaard’s chair. Zhukova apologized and said she utterly abhors racism and wanted to apologize to anyone offended by the image. Japanese fetish artist Namio Harukawa depicted voluptuous women who dominated and used men as human furniture.

In bondage, the term forniphilia was coined by bondage artist Jeff Gord, who specialized in the subgenre and maintained the website House of Gord. As bondage, forniphilia usually means the subject is tightly bound and expected to stay still for a long stretch. Gord said the maximum period he used depended on the techniques but generally did not exceed two hours. He also warned that the dangers mean it should only be done by experts. Some of his work used gags; a forniphilic gag is a gag whose primary purpose is sexual objectification or erotic humiliation. Proper safety needs frequent checks of the bound person’s condition.

In fiction, the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange includes a scene in the Korova Milk Bar furnished with tables shaped like naked women. In episode 7 of the 2021 Netflix Korean drama Squid Game, anonymous VIPs watching the blood sport are surrounded by human furniture painted with elaborate body art.
