Vanessa Duriès, also known as Katia Lamara (1972 – 13 December 1993), was a French novelist whose short life left two BDSM-centered books and a lasting cult status in some SM communities. She is best known for Le lien, published in English as The Ties That Bind, and for the unfinished second novel L’Étudiante. Youth, beauty, blunt slave narrative, national TV, and a fatal car crash fused into a legend that still circulates wherever people collect literary female submission.
Biography and Public Shock
Duriès wrote the French BDSM novel Le lien, widely described as drawn from her own experience as a BDSM slave. On release the book caused a stir in France because of her youth and beauty; she appeared on national television, including Bernard Pivot’s show, and in a pictorial and interview in the May 1993 French edition of Penthouse. On 13 December 1993 she died at twenty-one in a car crash in the South of France. Three other people also died in the crash. Early death plus explicit slave autobiography created cult status in parts of the BDSM world: a writer who documented the collar and never aged out of the story.
The 2007 Joint Edition and Dedication
In 2007 five chapters of her unfinished second novel L’Étudiante were published in France. A J’ai Lu edition that year, with an avant-propos by editor Franck Spengler and a preface by Florence Dugas, is dedicated to the memory of Vanessa Duriès, Nathalie Perreau, Jean-Pierre Imbrohoris, and their son, all killed on 13 December 1993. Spengler notes he was also Perreau’s editor and a friend of Imbrohoris. Between chapters two and three of L’Étudiante the volume inserts a short letter Duriès wrote to Spengler—editorial intimacy preserved as part of the text’s afterlife.
L’Étudiante: Student Life Beside the Scene
L’Étudiante is, like Le lien, cast as autobiographical. It was left incomplete when she died mid-writing. The book sets her extreme sexuality beside ordinary student life in Bordeaux. As in the first novel she is clear and blunt about BDSM scenes, but she also watches and mocks the quieter love lives of fellow students—lives that still fascinate her and push her toward a sharp analysis of the SM milieu. Though written in 1993, it appeared only in 2007 as a joint volume with Le lien from Éditions Blanche. The cover image comes from her French Penthouse pictorial—media fame recycled as literary packaging years after the crash.

English readers know the first novel as The Ties That Bind (Masquerade Books, ISBN 1-56333-688-X). French readers keep Le lien in the J’ai lu line (ISBN 2-290-30700-9) and the later joint presentations of the unfinished student novel.
