On the gay strip in Berlin’s Schöneberg, Tom’s Bar was a specific room: dark, sweaty, men only. It was a landmark for leather and cruising on the city’s queer map. The point was contact, not polite cocktail talk. Leather travelers who knew the streets used it as the last stop after a night had already gone long. At the end of February 2024 the bar closed. The next month the premises became the Berlin branch of Joan Igual’s Boyberry cruising brand. Boyberry comes from Barcelona and Madrid.
1982 to 1993
Tom’s Bar opened in Schöneberg in April 1982. Like Tom’s Saloon in Hamburg, it started as a leather bar. In 1993 it changed owners, and the character of the room changed with them. The reputation held. It was called a dark, sweaty, and debauched men-only cruising establishment, with a rough, manly atmosphere. Later crowds and dress codes modernized. It was no longer a pure copy of the 1980s leather clone. The name Tom, and the butch male fantasy of the Tom of Finland era, stayed part of the myth.
Two floors and a slogan
Inside: two floors and a darkroom. The building was for contact. The slogan was “for successful cruising.” Berlin Tourismus und Kongress GmbH said that line put the place in a nutshell, and that this was no exaggeration. People of all ages and backgrounds mixed there, especially late at night. The Rough Guide to Germany (2009) called it a good place to finish an evening. In Top 10 Berlin (2014), Juergen Scheunemann ranked Tom’s fifth among the city’s best gay and lesbian spots: a “traditional pub,” and a “well-known pick-up joint … not for those who are shy and timid.”
The leather calendar, then the handover
For leather history the closing mattered because Tom’s sat in the same Schöneberg ecosystem as Easter Berlin, the city’s annual leather and fetish event, and Folsom Europe, Berlin’s big BDSM and leather street festival. It was never only a place to drink. It was a cruising house with a darkroom, and the name outlived a strict leather dress code. Even when the interior was no longer a pure Tom of Finland clone bar, the promise of successful cruising and the rough atmosphere kept it on leather tourists’ lists. What ended in 2024 had a leather opening in 1982, an ownership turn in 1993, two floors and a darkroom, a place in the guidebooks, and a handover. The name stayed in what people tell. The floor plan went to the new operator.
