Spreadeagle, also spelled spread eagle or spread-eagle, is the pose with the arms out to the sides and the legs wide apart. The picture is an eagle with its wings open. The shape is an X. For people who watch adult film or practice BDSM, a body held that open reads as exposed and on display. It is a common sex position and a standard bondage structure. Opening the limbs leaves the genitals and the anus available for penetration, oral, impact, or teasing. The people doing it are adults who have negotiated.
The pose is not sexual on its own. Similar openings show up where bodies train for balance, stretch, and display: Olympic weightlifting, freestyle skiing, gymnastics, figure skating, and contemporary ballet. In figure skating, the spread eagle is a signature move in the field. Adult culture took a shape built for sport and dance and made the exposure erotic.
On a back, on the feet, and in between
The basic sex version has the receiving partner on their back, arms and legs wide, a variant of missionary. It allows deep penetration. Fingers or a toy can work the G-spot or the clit at the same time, and either partner can combine penetration with clitoral stimulation. The same base is used for oral, sometimes with vaginal massage. It is usually comfortable for the person on the bottom. If oral goes on until climax, the giver’s neck can ache from the angle. Wrists and ankles are usually held with rope or bondage cuffs. A spreader bar keeps the limbs at a set width in either orientation. The X-cross, also called a Saint Andrew’s frame, is standard dungeon kit: a fixed X that holds the wrists, the ankles, and often the waist, so a standing person stays open. Hanging an open body carries real risk. Shoulders, hips, and knees take the load. Circulation at the cuffs, a fall, and whether the hard point is rated for the weight all matter. There needs to be a quick release, and someone else paying attention. Start at a width the bound person can hold without the joints heating up. Add time only after checking color, temperature, and numbness in the hands and feet.
On command, and an older punishment
A forced spreadeagle stacks immobility on helplessness and leaves a lot of skin free. Back and buttocks suit impact. Face-up suits teasing, genital torment, wax, or tickling. Honor bondage means no rope. The person holds the spreadeagle because they were told to, and the exposure comes from staying open on command. If they freeze or dissociate under that order, stop and check. A clear stop word still applies.
During the American Civil War, soldiers convicted of theft, sleeping on duty, or cowardice could be tied spreadeagled to a large wooden wheel for five or six hours. That was public punishment. It is not how consent works in BDSM now. Consensual play uses the same geometry under a safeword and an agreement made beforehand. Using it that way does not erase the older coercive use. Blood-eagle is a separate thing: an image from historical ritual execution, not a template for play. Porn shows this pose so often that new players sometimes skip the talk. Say what the scene is for before it starts: penetration, a surface for impact, tease and denial, photos, or protocol. Before the first cuff closes, agree face-up or face-down.
