Spanking Love (スパンキング・ラブ) is a 1995 Japanese erotic feature directed by Shōji Tanaka from a story by Kenichi Yamakawa. It sits at the crossroads of commercial S&M cinema, softcore distribution, and 1990s Japanese cult celebrity: an SM film director, a femme fatale he “discovers,” a working dominatrix girlfriend, and a powerful client who treats kink as business and personal power. Ryō Masuda (Toshio Kakei) directs S&M movies. On a crowded street he asks a woman to star in one of his productions. Yumi Sakata (Yoshiko Yura) accepts on impulse. Her face—especially her eyes—turns the low-budget shoot into an unexpected hit. Ryō is drawn to her but reads something dangerous in her presence and tries to cut contact. The story refuses that clean exit.
Ryō’s girlfriend Mayumi Yamane (Kumi Shiraishi) works as a professional dominatrix for a powerful man. Her client, Ryūsaku Okunogi (also credited as Mr. Okonogi; Renji Ishibashi), wants Yumi for an S&M show club he owns. Mayumi fears she may be “sacrificed” if Okonogi does not get what he wants, and begs Ryō to persuade Yumi into the club. Ryō brings Yumi in by claiming he loves her and that Mayumi is only an old ex—a lie that rearranges the triangle.
Domme Stardom, Management Money, and Coercion
At the club, Yumi becomes a star dominatrix—even though Ryō’s earlier film showed her being whipped rather than holding the whip. That flip from bottomed-for-camera to top-for-hire is a sharp irony: performance, desire, and labor do not line up as soft romance expects. Ryō is torn between Mayumi and Yumi while standing to make money as Yumi’s “manager” and companion.
Okunogi defines sadism and masochism as “two sides of the same coin,” enjoys watching as much as participating, and refuses to let Mayumi retire. His power looks close to life-and-death control. One of Mayumi’s friends, Natsumi, kills herself rather than keep working in the S&M industry; Mayumi attends the funeral, and Ryō does not. The industry frame is work under pressure, with exit costs that can be fatal.

Issei Sagawa and Cult-Celebrity Backdrop
Off-screen notoriety includes Issei Sagawa. Arrested in Paris in the early 1990s for murder and cannibalization of his girlfriend, he later appeared in Hisayasu Satō’s pink film Promiscuous Wife: Disgraceful Torture (1992), becoming a cult celebrity. Spanking Love was Sagawa’s feature-film debut appearance—a detail that still colors how some viewers read the movie’s atmosphere of danger and exploitation around commercial kink.

Tanaka shot the film for Japan Home Video. Daiei released it in Japan on 6 May 1995. Video Maker issued Japanese VHS on 21 July 1995, reissued 4 August 2000. In the U.S., Media Blasters released VHS and DVD under the Tokyo Shock label on 26 September 2000.
In Japanese Cinema Encyclopedia: The Sex Films (1998), Thomas and Yuko Mihara Weisser rated it two out of four stars. For kink-history readers, the value is documentary rather than canonical masterpiece status: mid-90s Japanese erotic cinema packaging SM directors, pro-domme labor, club spectacle, and the overlap of love, management, and coercion.
