Spanking Love, スパンキング・ラブ, is a 1995 Japanese erotic feature directed by Shōji Tanaka from a story by Kenichi Yamakawa. It sits where commercial SM cinema, softcore distribution, and 1990s Japanese cult celebrity meet: an SM-film director, a woman he picks up for a role, a girlfriend who works as a professional dominatrix, and a powerful client who treats kink as business and as personal power. For readers of adult film and BDSM media, it is a period piece about how the Japanese adult industry showed domination, voyeurism, and control. Love, management, and coercion share the same relationship. The characters are adults. What follows is the film’s plot, not a guide to coercion or crime.
Ryō Masuda, played by Toshio Kakei, directs SM movies. On a crowded street he asks a woman to appear in one. Yumi Sakata, played by Yoshiko Yura, agrees on impulse. Her face, and especially her eyes, turns the low-budget shoot into an unexpected hit. Ryō is drawn to her and also reads her as dangerous. He tries to break off contact. The story does not let him leave cleanly. His girlfriend, Mayumi Yamane, played by Kumi Shiraishi, works as a professional dominatrix for a powerful client, Ryūsaku Okunogi, also credited as Mr. Okonogi and played by Renji Ishibashi. Okunogi wants Yumi at an S&M show club he owns. Mayumi fears she will be “sacrificed” if Okunogi does not get what he wants, and she begs Ryō to talk Yumi into the club. Ryō brings Yumi in by saying he loves her and that Mayumi is only an old ex. The lie rearranges the triangle.
At the club, Yumi becomes a star dominatrix on the payroll. Ryō’s earlier film had shown her being whipped, not holding the whip. Performance, desire, and labor do not line up the way a soft romance would want. Ryō is pulled between Mayumi and Yumi, and he stands to make money as Yumi’s manager and companion. Okunogi calls sadism and masochism two sides of the same coin. He enjoys watching as much as taking part, and his power looks close to life and death. The SM business is drawn as work under pressure, where leaving can cost a life. Mayumi’s friend Natsumi kills herself rather than keep working in it. Mayumi goes to the funeral. Ryō does not. The coldness is part of how the film draws the power inside that industry.
The cast also includes Yōsuke Nakajima as Dai. Off screen, the film carries the cult notoriety of Issei Sagawa. He was arrested in Paris in the early 1990s for the murder and cannibalism of his girlfriend. He later appeared in Hisayasu Satō’s pink film Promiscuous Wife: Disgraceful Torture (1992) and became a cult celebrity. Spanking Love was his first appearance in a feature. That detail still colors how some viewers read the danger and exploitation around commercial kink in the movie. The connection is the arrest, the charge, and the screen appearance. Tanaka shot the film for Japan Home Video. Daiei released it in Japan on 6 May 1995. Video Maker issued Japanese VHS on 21 July 1995 and reissued it on 4 August 2000. In the United States, Media Blasters released VHS and DVD on the Tokyo Shock label on 26 September 2000. In Japanese Cinema Encyclopedia: The Sex Films (1998), Thomas and Yuko Mihara Weisser gave it two stars out of four. For people reading kink history, the value is the record. Mid-1990s Japanese erotic cinema put an SM director, a pro domme’s labor, club performance, and the overlap of love, management, and coercion in one film. It is an adult movie about SM media. The industry that made it already knew that pain performed for a camera and the power around that work are not the same thing, and it still put both on the same release slate for Daiei, Video Maker, and later Tokyo Shock.
