Rosa Coote is a stock dominatrix in Victorian erotica, not a historical person with one continuous life. She works as a brand for the birch, schoolroom cruelty, and female disciplinary authority. Those texts sold adult fantasy to the porn market of their time. They are not a sexual guide aimed at minors, and they are not children’s reading. As a notional author she appears on William Dugdale’s The Convent School, or Early Experiences of A Young Flagellant. She is also the narrative voice of “Letters to a Lady Friend” and “Miss Coote’s Confession” in the pornographic magazine The Pearl. Henry Spencer Ashbee, the bibliographer of forbidden books, said The Convent School was “not altogether badly written,” then added that no part of the narrative was attractive. That cold shrug still marks the text, first of all, as a flagellation product.
The surname, and the pieces she is made of
The surname Coote is borrowed from a scandal. General Sir Eyre Coote was disgraced in a flogging scandal in 1815. In “Miss Coote’s Confession” he is Rosa’s grandfather, so real judicial and military birch culture is welded onto erotic fantasy. The character is widely thought to draw on Theresa Berkley, the real keeper of a flagellation brothel in Soho in the 1830s, whose name was already circulating in earlier birch literature. For BDSM readers Rosa Coote is a composite: a dominatrix archetype, a schoolmistress sadist figure, and a marketing mask male authors used to sell female-dominant discipline.
The name comes back
Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill later used the name in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, as headmistress of the Correctional Academy for Wayward Gentlewomen. The cameo shows that “Coote” still lasts in English-language erotic mythology as shorthand for institutional female discipline.
She did not need to be real
