Stradlin’s words appear to grow from a bondage encounter he described in interview form. A Mexican friend named Tony took him to meet a woman called Margot at her house. After drinks (tequila or something similar), she led them into the bedroom. Inside was a large naked man with an onion in his mouth, wearing women’s underwear and high heels, duct-taped against the wall. Stradlin and Tony cracked up: “What the fuck is going on here?” The woman was a dominatrix. That image—male client in forced femme gear, gagged, restrained by a pro Domme—lands almost unfiltered into a mainstream hard-rock album cut, years before soft-BDSM pop made power exchange a radio cliché.
Writing Night, Sitar, and Live Life
Slash has said the song was written one night at Stradlin’s house before the band went to Chicago to write. According to Slash, Stradlin was so high on heroin that night that he cobbled a sitar out of a cymbal, a broomstick, and strings—the homemade instrument becoming the inspiration for the coral-sitar intro heard on the record. The band first played the song live at Rock in Rio 2 on 20 January 1991; a live cut later appeared on Live Era: ’87–’93.
