National Leather Association International: Pansexual Leather Activism

2025年3月9日
A A

National Leather Association International (NLA-I) is a U.S.–based BDSM and leather organization with chapters in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1986 as the National Leather Association (NLA), it was built as an integrated national home for gay leathermen, kinky heterosexuals and bisexuals, SM lesbians, and transgender sadomasochists—especially as prosecutions targeted consensual SM media and private play. The group added “International” in 1991, ran Living in Leather conferences until 2002, nearly collapsed around the millennium, then revived with writing awards and later erotic art awards. Records live at the Leather Archives and Museum.

Origins: Seattle and Living in Leather

When NLA formed, legal pressure against sadomasochistic media and private consensual SM was rising—later symbolized internationally by the UK’s Operation Spanner (1990). Community groups answered with education, fundraising, and politics; NLA became a leading American fundraiser for Spanner defendants.

Competing in the 1986 International Mr. Leather (IML) contest inspired Steve Maidhof to organize a conference focused on education and activism rather than title pageantry alone. He recruited Seattle leather leaders including Cookie Andrews-Hunt, Wayne Gloege, Billy Jefferson, Jan Lyon, George Nelson, and Vik Stump. They incorporated the NLA in summer 1986 and hosted the first Living in Leather (LIL) conference in Seattle that October. Success sparked chapters in Vancouver and Portland and a national wave of SM/leather organizing. Early public branding leaned gay/lesbian, but heterosexual attendance grew and NLA became explicitly pansexual. Members outside the U.S. prompted the 1991 rename to National Leather Association – International.

March on Washington, Dallas, and SSCA

NLA helped organize the leather conference ahead of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. That energy fed the contentious Dallas Conference of February 1988, meant to discuss a national SM/leather/fetish organization. Dallas is remembered for bitter splits—men vs women, East Coast vs West Coast, old clubs vs new, club members vs unaffiliated players. Out of the fight came Safe Sane Consensual Adults (SSCA), which never gained traction and merged into NLA—then the only functioning national BDSM organization. Across roughly twenty-six years, about three dozen chapters formed; roughly a dozen remain active in recent tallies.

In 1989, a deaf chapter—“NLA: Deaf Chapter”—was founded by Michael Felts, Philip Rubin, Bob Donaldson, Rolf Hagton, Jim Dunne, Bobby Andrascik, and Charles Wilkinson; it later became International Deaf Leather (ended 2021). The SSCA merger turbocharged membership: by end of 1991 NLA counted 827 members across 46 U.S. states and parts of Canada, chapters growing from three to sixteen. Peak cities included New York, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Toronto. Writer Laura Antoniou later credited NLA with daring to name a unified “community” decades before kink umbrella language felt obvious—linking players in small towns to big-city clubs under one radical idea of connection across BDSM, rubber, leather, and fetish scenes.

Living in Leather as Education Powerhouse

LIL thrived from Seattle (LIL 1–3) to Portland (LIL 4–5) to Chicago (LIL 6–7). Attendance topped 700; it became the premier SM education and organizing venue, drawing major speakers. On October 11, 1991, opening ceremonies presented a Canadian leather pride flag variant with a horizontal row of red maple leaves through the white stripe. In 1994, Living in Leather VIII won Large Event of the Year at the Pantheon of Leather Awards.

Politically, NLA fought censorship, raised domestic-violence awareness, backed clubs and individuals harassed by police, and funded causes. Chuck Higgins led Spanner solidarity: Chicago demonstrations outside the British consulate and American fundraising exceeding $50,000—more than half the defendants’ legal costs. The international name change matched real international action and signaled that leather politics would not stop at U.S. borders when British men faced prison for consensual SM.

Decline, Near Death, and Revival

By the late 1990s, new groups filled niches NLA once owned alone: the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NLA was a founding coalition partner) handled legal advocacy; the Leather Leadership Conference became a political discussion forum. LIL 14 (Fort Lauderdale, 1999) and LIL 15 (Seattle, 2000) underperformed; Seattle left deep debt. Membership fell; LIL 16 was canceled. A dissolve ballot failed, but direction stayed murky. A bright cultural note: on December 12, 2000, NLA Florida offered a leather pride flag pledge at a Fort Lauderdale holiday party—“I pledge allegiance to the Leather Pride flag… with safety, sanity and consent for all.” Dallas hosted LIL in 2002—the last LIL. Local chapters, especially Columbus, Dallas, New England, and Oklahoma City, kept the national shell alive while interim presidents stabilized finances and paid down debt.

Revival brought new members and chapters. In 2007 NLA-I launched excellence awards for SM/fetish/leather writing:

  • Geoff Mains — non-fiction book
  • Cynthia Slater — non-fiction article
  • Pauline Reage — fiction novel
  • John Preston — short fiction
  • Samois — anthology

Past recipients include Laura Antoniou, Gloria Brame, Rachel Kramer Bussel, Jack Fritscher, Gayle Rubin, David Stein, Cecilia Tan, Tristan Taormino, and L M Somerton. In 2019 NLA-I added Erotic Art Awards named for Chéri Hérouard (Realism), Clovis Trouille (Surrealism), Gene Bilbrew (Animation), Aubrey Beardsley (Abstract), and Michael Kirwan (Expressionism)—placing visual craft beside literary craft on the same organizational stage.

Awards, Active Chapters, and Historical Footprint

Pantheon of Leather recognition includes Large Nonprofit Organization of the Year (1992) for NLA; 1993 Large Event for Pride Night co-produced by NLA: Metro New York with The Eulenspiegel Society, Excelsior MC, GMS/MA, and LSM; and 1994 Large Event for LIL VIII. The NLA is commemorated in the AIDS Quilt. Chapters listed as active in recent summaries include Columbus OH; Dallas TX (Pantheon Large Club 1999; Beyond Vanilla Small Event 2001; NLA Chapter of the Year 2015); Houston TX (Chapter of the Year 2011, 2018); Indianapolis IN; Northern Nevada (2017); Oklahoma City OK (2012, 2016); Orlando FL; San Antonio TX (2020); and Utah (2014).

Historical reading includes Steve Stein’s Twenty-Five Years of Living in Leather: The National Leather Association, 1986–2011 (Adynaton, 2012, ISBN 978-0985900403). Sister institutions—Leather Archives and Museum, NCSF, International Deaf Leather’s NLA roots—map how pansexual leather activism professionalized education, mutual aid, and awards culture. For kink readers, NLA-I is the organization that tried to weld geography, gender, and orientation into one leather “we,” paid Spanner legal bills from American wallets, taught a generation at Living in Leather, nearly died, and returned with literary and art prizes instead of only conference badges.

That arc still matters when scenes debate what “community” means: not a single clubhouse, but a national (then international) claim that rubber, leather, SM, and fetish players share political and educational interests across cities. NLA did not erase internal fights—Dallas proved that—but it kept insisting the fight belonged inside a shared umbrella. Chapters still running educational events and writing awards continue that insistence in a landscape now crowded with munches, online groups, and specialty nonprofits. When someone asks who first organized pansexual leather activism at national scale in the mid-1980s United States, the answer still starts with Maidhof’s Seattle crew, LIL’s first weekend, and a name that eventually stretched past national borders into Spanner solidarity and long-haul chapter survival.

Today’s kink map includes FetLife groups, local munches, and single-issue legal nonprofits; NLA’s older model was the multi-purpose leather tent—education conference, chapter network, political fundraiser, and later literary prize board. That breadth was both strength and burden: when LLC and NCSF specialized, LIL attendance sagged. The revival bet on culture work (awards, chapter excellence) rather than recreating 1991’s 827-member peak alone. For historians of BDSM organizations, NLA remains required reading: pansexual integration before the word was trendy, Spanner money when British courts criminalized consensual SM, Deaf Leather’s chapter origin story, and the stubborn local chapters that refused to let the national name die after the last Living in Leather closed its doors in Dallas.

What NLA Still Teaches Modern Scenes

Modern kink infrastructure includes FetLife groups, local munches, title contests, and single-issue legal nonprofits. NLA’s older model was the multi-purpose leather tent: education conference, chapter network, political fundraiser, and later literary prize board. That breadth was both strength and burden. When the Leather Leadership Conference and NCSF specialized, Living in Leather attendance sagged and debt rose. The twenty-first-century revival bet on culture work—writing awards, erotic art awards, chapter-of-the-year recognition—rather than only recreating the 1991 peak of 827 members.

For historians of BDSM organizations, NLA remains required reading. It practiced pansexual integration before the word was trendy, raised Spanner defense money when British courts criminalized consensual SM, incubated Deaf Leather from a named chapter, and survived because local chapters in Columbus, Dallas, New England, and Oklahoma City refused to let the national name die after the last Living in Leather closed in Dallas. Steve Maidhof’s IML-inspired conference idea still echoes whenever leather people insist education and activism belong beside pageantry. Laura Antoniou’s observation that NLA dared to call scattered kinksters a community remains the organization’s intellectual legacy: geography, gender, orientation, and club affiliation were supposed to meet under one leather umbrella, even when Dallas proved how hard that meeting could be.

Readers who want primary sources should pair chapter websites with the Leather Archives and Museum holdings, Stein’s twenty-five-year history, and Pantheon of Leather award lists that repeatedly recognized NLA events and chapters. The Canadian maple-leaf leather pride flag moment at LIL 1991 and the 2000 Florida pledge of allegiance to the leather pride flag are small cultural artifacts that show how NLA spaces staged national symbols for SM people who felt excluded from mainstream patriotism and mainstream gay politics alike. Spanner fundraising of more than fifty thousand dollars remains one of the clearest examples of U.S. leather money crossing the Atlantic for defendants whose only crime was consensual adult SM—exactly the prosecutorial climate that made a national integrated organization feel urgent in 1986.
