Mummification is a form of bondage in which a person is wrapped so that movement is heavily restricted. Common materials include duct tape, cohesive bandage, plastic wrap (cling film), medical bandages, and blankets. The practice sits inside Bondage (BDSM) and may be sexual play, sensory experiment, or therapeutic-feeling restraint. In classic full mummification the bottom is wrapped head to toe with only the nose—or another planned airway—left open for breathing.
Roles and Sensory Logic
The person wrapping is typically the Dominant (Dom); the person wrapped is the submissive (sub). Erotic charge usually comes from helplessness, full-body pressure, heat, immobility, and sensory deprivation—or from the careful attention of being bound layer by layer. Because mobility is near zero, negotiation, monitoring, and emergency cut tools are non-negotiable safety basics.
Self-Bondage Mummification
Some people wrap themselves—often only the legs—using plastic wrap or similar materials. That is self-bondage mummification. Practitioners may fasten wrap to furniture to cover more of the body without a partner. Self-bondage carries elevated risk: if circulation, breathing, or panic goes wrong, there is no second person to free you. Solo full-body mummification is especially hazardous and is not recommended for beginners.
Mummified by a Dominant
When a Dom mummifies a partner, wrapping usually goes far beyond the legs. Arms and chest are commonly bound together; the head may be covered, typically with the nose left open—or with materials that still allow airflow. Cohesive bandage is relatively breathable for many people; non-porous plastic or heavy tape traps heat quickly and needs closer monitoring. Some players use a sleepsack (BDSM) as a reusable mummification-like enclosure instead of disposable wrap.
Materials and Safety
- Plastic wrap — tight; poor breathability; heat builds fast
- Duct tape — strong; hard to remove; skin and hair risks
- Cohesive / medical bandage — often more breathable
- Blankets or fabric cocoons — softer sensory profile
- Sleepsacks — repeatable leather, latex, or fabric pods
Critical safety: continuous airway access, overheating checks, circulation, panic plans, scissors within the top’s reach, and time limits. Never leave a fully mummified person unattended. Agree how the sub will signal distress if speech is impossible. Aftercare may need rewarming, hydration, and time out of deep subspace. Academic references include Elizabeth Ruth Busbee’s Yale power-exchange thesis (2008) and David Rodemaker’s Altsex: The Clinician’s Guide to BDSM (2010). Done with consent and attention, mummification is one of the purest full-body helplessness aesthetics in adult BDSM—not a party stunt.
